Unusual Calf Muscle Dents?

This is soooo weird, because I was noticing "dents" in my calf muscles yesterday! They are present on both sides but different. Gotta figure they are normal, just unnoticed previously.

I tried the wrist/fist thing and have a dent in my left wrist but not my right.

I was at one point freaking that my left hand seemed smaller than my right, but then I realized - yeah, it is! I have always worn a smaller ring size on my left hand than on my right.

I'm now a little past six months into the twitching odyssey (a bit longer than that since the tingling, etc. started) and am doing a lot better, though it is weird how the fear still jumps up & down and wants to get my attention sometimes.

Hi

I have dents in both my wrists where the veins are - think it's normal! However, I did spend two months obsessing over a bone that is more prominent in my left thumb than in my right. I asked my GP about it and he said he didn't know whether it was atrophy or not (thanks doc!). However, it is now 5 months since I last focused on that and it just doesn't bother me anymore. Still worried about my persistant hotspots though!

Hi

I've worried about the same thing so your post came as a relief especially with all the replies!. I find if I clench my fist hard I have dents on both sides. It must be normal, I guess it kind of sucks in the muscle if ya know what I mean.

I have dents in both wrists, larger on the left than the right. I lost a lot of weight recently and totally freaked out when I began to notice dents in my hands and wrists - never made the connection that my hands were losing fat as well...I'm an idiot. I am eating a brownie right now in the hopes to make my hands a little less dented. ;)

Worry not, my dear BFSer.... its alll in your mind... The dent you see below the wrist is formed by two tendons from the forearm. Actually, it seves as a reference to pinpoint the radial pulse.

You are not crazy, mate... The squirrel with the Mexican hat that lives under my pillow told me, so no worries...

Cheers

You know it's weird, because I'd never heard of people worrying about the various "dents" that we have in our muscles...until I came here. We all have those. Once I was missing the normal indentation in my calf muscle and THAT freaked me out. I had ruptured the muscle (while dancing, ) and it took a very long time to heal.

Atrophy doesn't work that way, at least not in my experience. The entire muscle shrinks, rather symmetrically. It just becomes apparent that one side is MUCH thinner than the other. It looks more like weight loss, but profound, unhealthy weight loss.

I've never seen a NMD patient with "dents," I've only ever noticed extreme (and obvious) emaciation. And I mean SO obvious that you wouldn't be using the limb, or polling a message board to ask if this was atrophy. You would KNOW there was something very serious going on.

I hope this helps,
Blessings,
Sue

thank you all very much for your replies; you guys are friggin awesome. It was one of those things that I was pretty sure was normal, but that small percentage of me that was concerned brought me here (I would ask a non bfser, but asking people to make a fist so you can examine whether or not their wrist has a dent in it is...odd.) Other than the fact we all twitch like caffeine addicts, I'd say this is a pretty diverse sampling of people here, so it's always interesting to hear about "normal" oddities with our bodies that are unrelated to bfs.

It is absolutely ridiculous how our hyper awareness of als/ms/blah blah symptoms makes us notice things we never would otherwise. I drop stuff, but I'm clumsy; I catch my foot on things, but I walk in the city and shuffle my feet a lot. I would never even notice this stuff, but when it happens now there's this little part of my mind that goes "hmm. interesting." I don't flip out, but it's the simple fact that I notice it that's unhealthy.

I'm still hoping that the weakness in my hand has been created by my mind. Not in my head, in the sense that I am imagining it, but created by it. I was once so paranoid about catching an STD from this girl I had hooked up with, that my twigs and berries started itching and tingling (haha, waay too much info I know, but we're all good friends here, right?). After about 10 tests I had three doctors tell me I was fine. I stopped worrying, and the itching/tingling went away never to return. I think my anxiety and fear caused a psychosomatic reaction in my body. Maybe this hand weakness is created by my mind, maybe a little weakness is a symptom of this crazy bfs rollercoaster, maybe performing random strength tests have used little hand muscles that aren't used to being tested, who knows.

I think with time my mind will (hopefully) resolve these concerns. I am on my 9th month of twitching. I think my one year anniversary (right around Thanksgiving) will be a good thing for me mentally. But I'd be in much worse shape if it wasn't for these boards. Just this thread has given me reassurance, comfort, a laugh and a kick in the pants. Thanks for that!

Andy,

Even Greek statues have dents -- it's part of the human musculature. But the dents are invisible on very overweight people. Have you noticed that? Next time you see an obese person, see if you can spot any dents. If you took all the fat away between the skin and muscles, we'd all be Dent City.
