Tongue Twitching: Confusion and Concern

I am one of those lucky tongue twitchers. I think there is a lot of confusion about the tongue movements people see that are mostly normal but that we laypersons have no way to distinguish and freak out.Unfortunately, mine are the type I feel (a few quick pulses in a tiny spot, a buzz, a zap, a vibration, etc.). I get this daily but not constantly and have for a year. I would like to know how many of you FEEL your tongue twitches when you are not looking at your tongue. If you don't mind, I'd also like to know what kind of feeling you get and how often. Thanks,Krackersones

The pic may be coming soon. I am not that good with stuff like that but I'm visiting family and I'm sure I can get my computer savy neice to help me with it.

Well as you already know I'm also one of the lucky tongue twitchers. I don't really get to see the twitches since they are usually quick and by the time I get to a mirror they're gone. I did however get to see my tongue spasms several times (where the tip would contract and release while the tongue is perfectly resting - a bizarre sight, though slightly funny as well), and one big scary thumper I had. To be honest I don't check my tongue anymore (which still twitches daily), I simply couldn't care less. You too will get there at some point.

Thanks for responding May. Mine are quick too and I probably couldn't seen them either if I tried to rush to a mirror. They come so randomly. I often wonder if the sensation I feel involves a sensory or motor nerve or both. I may ask about this next time I visit the neuro but I sort of doubt anyone has ever spent much time analzying this and probably never will until it happens to one of the neuros themselves.I hope I get more responses since I feel a lot of the tongue twitching threads blend the twitches you see vs feel which I think are often two different phenomenon.I also hope to get to the "I don't care place" but I'm not. I'm certaintly better than I was. I don't get a surge of anxiety each time it happens but more of a thought of "Darn, I wish that wouldn't happen! It is so freakin weird." The biggest thing that helps is that this was one of my first symptoms rather than a progression of other things. The frequency has increased a tiny bit over a year but not the severity or nature.Krackersones

When I've had tongue twitches, I've felt them, and they were too fleeting and brief to see in a mirror. Are you thinking that folks are actually looking at their reflections, sticking out their tongues, seeing the perfectly NORMAL quivering of the tongue when it is extended, and mistaking that for twitching? :p LOL.That would be too funny, but certainly not surprising. Nope, I've had legitimate fascics of the tongue, having felt an actual "pulse-like," buzzing, or electrical shock sensation. My husband has had the same with his bfs. It often occurred as a hot spot, with multiple fascics over several days or weeks. Does that answer your question? Blessings, Sue

Thanks, Sue. It does answer my question. I actually do think a lot of people think of tongue twitching as the quivering tongue in the mirror. I am going to be seeing my neuro again and they seem so befuddled when I describe the type tongue sensations I get. Almost like they can't even think of a comment. It makes me think they have just never heard of such a thing. It is interesting that you and your husband had them but they went away. None of my twitch types have ever totally gone away although they lessen in severity, frequency, and itensity. The tongue ones are still daily which is one of the reasons I think about them more.Krackersones

I don't feel any twitching, but my tounge when I stick it out looks like it is trembling. Almost like arms or legs after a hard work out. Sort of quivers, but I can't feel them. I look at it when resting in my mouth and I think it stops, a little here and there but for the most part is still.

PrayMantus,What you describe is TOTALLY normal and not a symptom of anything. This is the reason for my post. I don't think the ones you see and feel should be confused since they cause a lot of unnecessary worry for those that see what you describe. Even us that feel them can be reassured from the others with them and the fact that without weakness they are just another nerve effected like all the rest.Krackersones

hey Krackersones - when laying in bed -- every morning -- twitching just works it's away around my body - single twitches, all over, including my tongue and face and lips and (the one i hate) around the eyes. Let us know what the neuro says. as always, thanks!

I did ask my neuro about this and he said that he only looks for twitching in a tounge that is completly relaxed in the mouth. He also said that if you are obsessing about your tounge and making it do things it normally doesn't do then it can get fatigued just like any other muscle and of course twitch.
