Since I have fortunately found this wonderful site, with all the supportive people-I always am looking for, but have never found...anyone...with the symptoms that really bother & upset me!I can take, the arm & leg fasics/myoclonus- the cramping, etc-but I can not take it when these strong "myoclonus" jerks go into my trunk....always when I lie down-! (For a nap..or esp. before bed!)-- :( They don't always happen--are very capricious & unpredictable--but, like last nite---I was Sooo tired & sleepy-I had a really good day! Very few--if any fasics/myoclonus or cramps!(and -I laid down to get a good nite's sleep.,..& "they"...hit me! I'm talking about 'myoclonic jerks"....in my chest, abdomen---I  felt like (for a few mins, )--the girl in the movie "The Exorcist"-! Strong muscle contractions---so strong & bothersome--I could not get to sleep-!My wife was in her room--sleeping---(she usually will softly massage me....when this happens which helps me fall off..)--& I did not want to bother her--as she was really tired!I finally...sat up...in bed......my back straight up against the baseboard...& did the "breathing excercises"....my "biofeedback specialist" taught me! (Breathe in thru nose to a count of 4--hold to count of 4....breathe out...thru mouth to count of --I finally fell off to sleep at 1 AM....after going to bed.."dog tired"...at 11 PM--(and I had a very good day! Very few if any..."fasics/myoclonus/cramping"--)---This ONLY happens......when I recline! My neuro calls it "positional myoclonus"---Says....Neuros not sure of the "why'...but somethging ...to do with "sensory loops"-!OK---my fellow bfs-ers---does anyone here--ever get any strong muscle contractions...(either myoclonus....which i arely read about here)--or strong fasics---that go into the trunk...& chest..& that kinda disrupts breathing...when lying down?I'm really curious! I'm going to Mayo Clinic.....July--! Wish it were...next week-! Please--get back-! On this issue..I really feel..."alone"---! :( :( Thanks--Christian

I don't get these, but my husband jerks violently all the time when going to sleep. It really is like something out of the exorcist. He's done this for years and has not concerns at all over it. My mother reports that my father does the same thing.

Hi Mahwah_Fresh--Thanks for your response. :D) What your husband & father are experiencing are called "hypnogogic jerks" which are a common...pre-sleep 'jerking'...or 'myoclonus'! They are called "hypnic jerks'-!They happen right before sleep & most often the person falling off to sleep-are not even aware of what is happening. ;) What I am referring to is where my "muscle jerking" or 'myoclonus'....starts 'acting up'...in the chest & in the trunk...for minutes.....while I am awake! Basically....where the myo/fasciculation.....goes to the chest-abdomen-diaphragm....while awake! Hopefully---I'll get more responses--- This is something....when it happens...really bothers me....for starters....it affects the breathing....(I'm inhaling...& my chest muscle is spasming...inward!)---Maybe...Mario..or the Dr. will respond! I just e-mailed my neuro--& he responded---"not to worry....as it is part of the BFS spectrum"-! They go away...when I stand or sit up....they are 'positional'-! Anyway---I was doing well---& I feel I can "handle"...the other stuff----just "don't mess with my going off to sleep!" ;)
