Shoulder Twitching While Sleeping

My shoulder two nights ago...oddly the night I got the good clinical exam...it started to twitch so fast that I woke up to what sounded like a helicopter landing....So now if I am in the same position...when sleeping it starts up again....Has anyone had this? I want to have a nice Easter but then I read one of the posts on here about someone who got it in the shoulder down to the hip and it turned out to be ALS...ARG!!! Good news is that the thigh and knee seem less...SEEM...So now what?

You know how many times my shoulder has done that? Thousands! Add that to every other part of my body. All part of BFS. Don't stress over it.

Get 'em all the time. Just like yours, they come and go. That is one of the most reliable indicators of bfs - they come and go. Sometimes they stay for a long while, but then they stop for a while. In the baddies, they don't stop for a while. So go have a great Easter!

Yep just got it the other day for about 2 min. I about lost it! I got cold chills and wanted to crawl on the floor and cry! I have 2 children so I have to stay strong and not let them see me. I kept my mind busy and went for a walk to the park. I absolutely understand how you feal, anytime a new twitch pops up I just loose it!

Do not worry. Nerves in shoulders tend to be hyperexcitable like in thenar and hypothenar muscles. I have widespread twitching but for the years, I probably got them most times in deltoid muscles. I would like to PrayMantus (I think he is the one who reffered to case of ALS that presented with shoulder-hip twitching) to elaborate a bit on this story. Even though, it was LOCALIZED, not widespread.

There's no reason to fear stories like that one with ALS starting in the shoulder, just because you have been having a shoulder twitch. Once you have a BFS diagnosis from the neuro and you have ALREADY had widespread twitching then you are GOOD. With BFS, at somepoint you can expect to have a twitch just about everywhere, including the shoulder, arm, finger, tongue, etc. It's not as if "this time" it is an ALS twitch.,...your twitching has already been proven to be benign. No worries!

From what I've read, in the very rare cases where twitching is the first symptom that is noticed, it is very localized. Body wide twitching that jumps from place to place is simply not associated with ALS. So, when I get a new twitch it just strengthens my belief that when I finally see a neurologist, I'll be diagnosed with BFS.

Thanks guys...This helps a lot...I am a lot less on edge than I was before the clinical...Now I just want to do the EMG...I will have her do my shoulder and arm for good measure...I am telling myself that my anxiety is stressing out my bicep and shoulder as well..I have had the arm tightness off and on for a while ...longer than a month...at least two...and no weakness..not to mention that the day of the clinical exam I took 15 pound weights and did reps of holding them out like I was flying...I think this may have started it...

As a newbie here...So, although my calves ankles feet twitching pretty much 24/7, the fact that I get the odd twitch in my tricep, shoulder, diaphram, lip, thumb, etc is a good thing? My diaphram as spasming a bit this morning and just about had a friggin' bird over it lol. BTW, I've been in the club now for 3 weeks. Started both calves same time (or so it appeared). From my reading, am I correct to assume that even thought the twitches are 95-99% in my calves, the fact that the other 5-1% appear in other areas of my body is a good thing? Thanks again.

@giantfanFirst of all, it isn't necessarily a bad thing if 100% of your twitching occurs in your calves. Calves are one of the most common muscles to twitch with BFS and benign twitching can concentrate in most any muscle. But yes, it is a good thing that you also experience twitching in other area in that it further enforces the clarity of a BFS diagnosis.

@Johnnythejet,Sorry, didn't want to look like a thread hijacker, just just trying to further build on the OP's suggestion of knee/thigh moving to shoulder. But thank you for sharing - it's more reassuring to think it's more common if occurs in other areas also versus a 'oh my gosh, it's spreading to all over!' in just a matter of weeks/days (since I'm a complete noob at the experience). Seems to also be much exercise related (eg if I work my quads, they'll be doing the happy dance all night/next day). Hang in there Jam3276, sounds like you've got a ton of twitching company here to assure you there's nothing to worry about! Have you been doing some repetitive work perhaps with the shoulder that it's triggering it more? I personally definitely find more twitches in areas that I earlier exerted more.Dave

And yes, exercise can affect muscle twitching to a large degree. I work out a lot and after a good leg workout my quads will go nuts for several hours after the work out. I worked out my chest/shoulders/tri's last night and when I got into work this morning my right tricep kept twitching for the better part of an hour. Big, thumping twitches. That tells me I had a good workout. ;)
