Seeking Advice for Weird Health Issues

I know ya'll are not doctors, but by reading your posts, I know how much research ya'll have done and how smart you are, and I really would like your input. You know my situation - but things have been getting a little weirder - even for me.THE GOOD...Sunday I worked out for two hours, an hour on the treadmill with resistance and then an hour of lifting weights. All of the weights I lifted were consistant with what I was lifting six months ago. Then tonight after dinner I did 27 pushups - normally it's 25.THE BAD...For the last five weeks my voice has been getting "gravely" off and on - five weeks ago I was really hoarse now it comes and goes with no other real symptoms of being sick... I read once that this could be an early sign for the big nasty... or could I just have the lingering creeping crud that seems to stick with some folks... Maybe it's the sinus issue I've had for the past six months...THE UGLY...This mornig my right arms was still "asleep" after the rest of my kibbles and bits woke up, I had a hard time getting it to work properly (shaving was scary). For the rest of the day that arm has felt worse than it normally does... but then I still did the pushups tonight...So... there I am... Am I being "hyper sensitive"...The really hard part... I can't remember what "normal" feels like anymore.... Thanks for listening!!! Rob.

Hi Rob. I am relatively new here, but I went back and read your original post again. I think it is a good thing the hoarseness comes and goes as it is my understanding that anything that comes and goes is not progressive and therefore not the most dreaded outcome. I have post nasal drip and GERD and I get this from time to time. I'm also glad you were able to wake up your arm eventually today. Again it seems the weirdness comes and goes. when is the muscle biopsy? It sounds like it might give you some answers. A very good thing that the doctor said he was not convinced and emg was not indicative of MND. I will be thinking of you and wish you the best. You did pushups today!!! A very good sign! Victoria

My uneducated guess - doesn't really sound like ALS. The arm thing could be a pinched nerve, but yes it is strange, that you can lift weights and do push ups but yet have difficulty shaving. You are definately not being hypersensitive. Is your arm in a lot of pain? Do you at all notice any positional tremors in your arms or fingers? DO you have pronator drift? - Hold out your hands palms up flat as you can for 30 sec with eyes closed, can you keep them flat? Forget about your throat or voice, I just don't think ALS shows up in multiple places until its quite obvious. Keep doing those push ups. :D)

Hi Rob, I've been following your story, and I agree with the supportive words you have received already. The voice thing, yeah, thats not bulbar, not at all. Once voice issues start, they are very evident, do not occur alone, meaning you would have swallowing issues, chewing issues as well, not just a gravily voice, and the gravily voice would not come and go at all, it would come when these other things would be going on as well, and you wouldnt just have a strange voice, you would not be able to speak properly. All of these things come together and scream clinical weakness because the muscles in your throat, jaw, and even the ones that control your voice box, are all dieing or the nerves are that is.. It is most likely related to your sinus problems which I suffer from as well, and the yuk, horse voice also. I hate it.The very thought of you being able to accomplish everything that you do on a workout is very reassuring to me that you will not be getting dxsd with the big nasty. You have too much strength. Really, you should take great comfort in that.Take CareRobynn :D)

Sunday I worked out for two hours, an hour on the treadmill with resistance and then an hour of lifting weights. All of the weights I lifted were consistant with what I was lifting six months ago. Then tonight after dinner I did 27 pushups - normally it's 25.all signs most importantly this one points out that you DONT have als ps I get gravelly voice alot as well mine gets bad in the winter cause the heaters in the house dry out my throat ps I truly believe from your posts that you are fine Take care

Hi Sam,Your having a hard time at the moment eh?Okay first of all if your going to check for pronator drift etc. remember that the effects of this drift are massive...basically you close your eyes and 1 of your arms will drop and twist....dont worry and dont self test too much okay.Secondly your voice is probably gravely because of the change in weather. My own voice can be gravely sometimes off and on (usually from liquor and drunken singing, shouting and smoking)Pick your battles Sam...You can't have leg onset, arm onset and bulbar onset all at once. It just doesnt work that way.If you have als since February you simply wouldn't be able to RUN for 1hr and LIFT WEIGHTS for another hour.No way no how.Not possible. A person with als for long enough for symptoms to become obvious(twitching/weakness) and then have those symptoms continue for the bones of 8months wouldnt be able to get off the floor ...never mind a push ups.You did 27 push ups.alarm bells not ringing.I have read many papers that say under clinical observation once twitching begins ATROPHY is obvious within 30days...not weakness...ATROPHY.Thats under large scale clinical observation its not a survey. If you are twitching and your still running jumping doing sit ups after 5 months it just aint als.Numb hands/arms in the morning...put it into the search engine here on this site...common as dirt...Iv had it.... I had it this morning!Anxiety and sleeping position can explain that away in a heart beat.So overall my opinion is that your problems stem from your back surgery and are exacerbated by your anxiety about als.Lets look at the facts.1. 3hr clinical exam: Clean no weakness or atrophy.2. Emg: dirty but NOT indicative of als3: Lifestyle: Doing everything you used to.Take care and remember that without clinical weakness its not als. It cannot be diagnosed without demonstratable clinical weakness no matter what the emg says. no clinical weakness:no worriesRegards,Darragh

Ya'll are rock stars - thank you so much for taking the time to reply, I can't tell you how much I really appreciate your time!I definitely needed the infusion of your logical responses. I tend to be very linear and logical with my thoughts and feelings - but somehow when my body starts doing weird things - that logic goes out the window.I did the pronator drift test you recommended, and my hand started to turn - but I don't believe that was the effect you were describing.I'm meeting the doc for the muscle biopsey on 11/2 - I'm not sure if he will do it that day + or just talk about doing it...In regrads to the question about my arms shaking - the do from time to time - but its off and on. I haven't been able to discern a pattern. They feel like they will "give out" and just drop to my sides all the time - that's why I made the comment about shaving. This morning although my arms weren't numb when I woke up - they were definitely "heavier" then they have been. Your advice is so spot on - I just need to live, and not worry about my bits and pieces until they truly do something remarkable!Thank you again for talking me back off the ledge. :)Peace.Rob

I too have been struggling with a hoarse voice since last October 2009. One ENT says GERD, another says dysphonia. Neuro thinks Myathenis Gravis. When I am really tired, my voice is worse; better with rest but have not heard my original voice in a year. My choir singing has gone done to the pits. I too worry if it is the monster lurking around. I am extremely fatigued, muscle jumping, amd have fallen a few times in the past couple of years. Scared is not even close to what I feel. Had the EMG and waiting on results. I still can do things but exhaust in a very short time and it takes longer to recoop. Hope you find the answer you are looking for too. Good luck. busybusy

I agree with everyone else=there is no way you can be doing all the exercise with only fasiculations, pain and numbness as your nemisis=Alot of us here wake up with hands numb- i was told by the mayo clinic with all of my heavy lifting i tore the Labrum and in doing so causes your nerves to crossfire and so on -can cause tremor or whatever just because the nerves have been damaged in the area and they tend to not know always which way to go-(dr told me that one) and i just have a small tear- the hoarseness -like everyone else it doesnt just show up as hoarsenss -and the hypersensitive is your nerves on high frequency just looking for any twitch or pain or voice change-stress can make everything you are looking for 10 fold worse- believe me i know go have a good drinkin binge (like ionyZarrion) and see if you notice everything as you do without booze-(sorry ionyZarrion im not using you as an example i just read where you have said that before) LOL ---- anyway i agree with everyone here -dont believe you have the possibility of very early signs of ALS- YOU DONT= YOU ARE OK buddyDavid

Rob, not to sound like a broken record, but the heavy arm thing reminds me of how I felt before i was diagnosed with thyroid disease. Have you had that checked? Also, low Vit D can make you feel like you have heavy muscles. How is your level?

I had the heavy arm thing also along with the twitching. I thought I was doomed. I had very very low Vitamin D. I am and have been on 50,000 i.u a week of Vitamin D.. I am on a six month treatment of Vitamin D. I had twitching bad for about 3.5 months and they have slowly trickled down to next to nothing. If someone would have told me then that my twitching and symptoms would get better, I wouldn't have believed them. My relief came only when I took Magnesium. I am doing the supplement thing and feel better all around but the twitching didn't get any relief until I took the mag. Keep us updated.

The last two posters might be on to something: Vitamin D, I am another, the heavy arm seemed to go away once I was taking the perscription 50K IU dosage. Rob, being up in the Emerald City your sunlight is already diminished and here comes Novermber . . .

Thank you, ALL of you for your insights and the kindness of your responses! The other day, I really let this thing get the better of me, the more I thought about it, the worse it got. You need to know that you have definitely increased the quality of my life – what a gift that is. SO – thank you! You’ve helped me identify that my symptoms haven’t changed at all. My arms are still heavy and along with it all of the other weird stuff my body is doing, but really, its no different than it was. Something is going on somewhere – but it doesn’t seem to be killing me.Thank you again!Peace.Rob.

Sorry to hijack this thread but about the vitamin D again... I also am low. Initially I was 24 so I started taking some cod liver oil and getting out more without sunscreen. I am now up to 26 after three months. Yes I know it's very slow and my doctor gave me a prescription. She wants it over 30. It was funny cause the nurse was asking me why I was so low... I'm too young to be this low she tells me. I told her it's cause I have two young toddlers... they wear me out.But if your low on vitamin D...it can affect you mentally and physically. I am going to try and get my level to 30 at least. Hope you are doing better btw.
