Replicating Success - Gatorade Flavor

Having read the original post on Gatorade curing twitching, I rushed out and bought 2 x 600ml bottles (somewhat cynically I must confess). Imagine my surprise when after only FOUR days, the twitching had almost disappeared. I am over the moon. I've suffered for over a year now, and at times, it's driven me nearly insane. My specialist told me it was stress-related, and that I needed to learn to relax (HELLO, we're living in the 21st Century where the pace of life is getting faster and more hectic!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!)
This site has been a great help: so I've registered, and am now posting a THANK YOU. I would urge people to try the Gatorade/Powerade thing: I believe it does work: some people it may take longer than others, obviously. I get through about 1 litre a day, and I also drink loads of water.
Good luck to everyone on this site: I hope your symptoms ease as mine have.

Sorry, all. Hate to sound like the spoiler, but Gatorade doesn't work for me. I'm a long distance runner, so I practically live on the stuff. I wish it did.

For those that are looking for a similar Gatorade type drink with less sugar, there is a product called Gookinaid. You can get it over the internet, or I know REI sells it. Also Hydralite is good too.

It has less calories and less sugar. It has all the same good stuff Gatorade has.

Mark,
Where can I find the smart water? Just checked my grocery store and didn't see anything except regular water and gatorade (which I bought some) but I don't want all the sugar.

Check any health food store. I'm sure they have a website (who doesn't) if all else fails.
Here in NYC it became a common item in most food type stores. I usually look around the Poland Spring area :)

Thanks ginny...I live here in Atlanta and haven't tried Kroger but will. The gatorade which I've been drinking for the last two days just has too much sugar and sodium....makes me more thirsty and I have a sugar buzz which i dont need.

Hi All,

Great topic. My neuro is from China (I mention this because he was taught to treat the whole body and not just tell people it is all related to stress) and the first thing he asked me about was my diet, how much tea I drink and how much B-12 and B-6 I take in. He then very careful explained about the relationship between the body/brain's balance of chemicals and muscle twitching and other BFS symptoms. He said that he sees people in his office all the time with shaking, twitching and tremors and 99% of the time it is the body out of balance due to a lack of certain vitamins or too much of somethng. (i.e. soda, tea) He said that in our area (central NJ, pop. over 1.2 million) that they may see 10-12 cases (for the entire area, not just his practice) a year of a serious neurological disease (you know the big 3, ALS, MS and Parkinson's) Now if I could just get my self to believe this I would be a happy person. Happy thoughts to all.

Anything more on the vitamin/mineral/electrolyte imbalance thing I'd be really interested in. I truly believe it is the key to this whole thing.
Did he say you needed more Vit B 6 and 12? How much?

Ryan, thanks for sharing your info. I also have IBS (I think). I had bowel problems so bad that I had a colonoscopy. My bowel troubles are not as bad now (don't know why) but I still do have bouts of it. I had the bowel problems before my twitching started over a year and a half ago. I will also try your suggestion and see how it works. Thanks so much
Shae

IBS here as well (diagnosed after various tests, including a colonoscopy, failed to reveal any physical abnormalities). Started about a year and a half before the BFS. Now it comes and goes.

Hi - can't talk but a second! ( at work right now) -- I only drink maybe 1/2 to 1 small bottle per day. My twitching was limited to my left cheek area, but it was every single day several times an hour all day long and driving me bananas! So I found this site looking for answers. I discovered this post by the guy who tried Gatorade and so I tried it but not that much --and it worked. I still have not twitched since! And it had gone on for about a month or so non-stop until I drank the Gatorade. Maybe a coincidence??? I don't know. But a little probably wouldn't hurt you to try it. God bless!

Linda

I would love to drink this anti BFS elixir, if only I knew what it was...
We Australians have never heard of GATORADE.
Is it some sort of lemonade made from Alligator skins?
Truly (jokes aside) I'd like to know what it is.

To Ryan and all who have replied here, I have just recently joined this forum (see JanT posts on Experiences with BFS) and having read these posts on electrolyte imbalances and links to digestive conditions, little light bulbs are going on in my head. My severe twitches started in the last month or so and I also recently changed my diet (on the advice of a nutritionist to include more protein, esp. oily fish, nuts and dark green veg - to balance blood sugar and increase magnesium levels). I was also taking vitamins. This diet has caused my bowel to become very active tending towards IBS at times. I am now wondering if this new diet is causing me to have electrolyte imbalance due to an overactive bowel? I have never heard of gatorade in Northern Ireland but will look up the website quoted by Linda. I have just had blood tests for magnesium and calciumlevels so maybe these will shed light on the electrolyte imbalance? I will mention this to my GP next week. Thanks for this new direction, Jan

Hi to all,
maybe dehydrogenation is the key. My twitches also started right after a hard diet. I have tried to become a vegetarian. After loosing 8 kg in few weeks i felt a crampy feeling in the calves and after doing sports it began to twitch. This is almost a year ago. When i look at my calves I can see that there are well-definied (i hope you understand what i mean) - i can clearly see every muscle although there are not really big.
I assume that during the diet all glucose storages in the muscle have been exhausted and to work on it has to burn the muscles himself (CK creatin kinease).

Here is my line of argument:
metabolic dysbalance - stress - alcohol - anxities - alcohol - etc....
because
- when the sympathetic nervous system is working it pours out glucose for a better fight with the tiger :D)
- when the parasympathetic nervous system is working it stores glucose in the liver for the next fight.
- drinking alcohol prevents the glucose storage because the liver is already busy
- if we are in stress all day long (or anxious) only the sympthicus is working until the parasympathicus is reducing it.

I was always wondering about two facts which i have noticed with me:
- when I am on a party and I am nearly drunken - there are no twitches (parasympathicus is working or enough hydrogenation)
- the day after is horrible - weakness and twitchies (sympathicus or no glucose in the muscles)

In gatorate there is a lot of sugar - so this could be the solution. Now I have to go to the supermarket - Ryan - if this works i spend you a big Emilyomouse beer :)

some interesting things...

my twitching "officially" started in Jan 04 with relentless eyelid twitching. Other people here have reported the same thing. I went to an opthamologist, and she said it was benign.

Then, after an adverse drug reaction to Avelox following sinus surgery, I developed the body-wide twitching, and this went on for a few weeks. I didn't think it was anything serious, I thought it was related to the drugs.

Later that year, I developed a nasty anal fissure (lots of fun let me tell you) that cause rectal spasms! (twitching). I had to have a simple outpatient procedure to get rid of the fissure, since it was so bad. During this time, I got an IBS diagnosis.

Then, 3 months ago, I started twitching again, and got cramps. This time I discovered *** and freaked out. the twitching naturally got worse.

Here is my theory...

1. Some kind of infection set this thing off, and I think it was related to the bacterial sinus infection I suffered. Everyone has some bacteria in their sinuses, and it is only when this gets out of control that it becomes a problem. How many here suffered some kind of cold or infection before the twitching started? I bet a lot. I think there is still bacteria in there, that my body is constantly fighting (high alert)

2. Antibiotics and steroids (Advair & Prendisone) were taken prior to the twitching. I developed the eyelid twitching one week into taking Advair. Connection?

3. The rectal twitching due to the fissure (injury) caused the nervous system to become "hyper-sensitive." It's like flinching before someone hits you, even though there is no punch coming.

4. stress plays a huge roll. When I developed my latest bout of twitching, I was mid-way through my first semester in a PhD program, working 30 hours a week, with a pregnant wife, and a sick 2 1/2 year old kid at home. I'm totally stressed.

can anyone relate to any of this?

I would have to say Gatorade does not work for me either. I am an ultra distance athlete and live on that stuff. I started 'twitching' in August and it seems to not be letting up. I am not a stressed person nor do i have anxiety. I can live with the twitching so my biggest complaint is the fatigue. Does anyone have a remedy for this?? I 'have' to work out several hours a week (10-20 hrs) and my fatigue is knocking me down! I would love any advice. Thanks!!!! :D)

HI
I think you maybe on to something here.
I started powerade last night , a couple of bottles during the evening and although my symptoms have not disappeared they are the lowest they have been for weeks. During the time i'm on erythromycin for sinus infectionwhich has played havoc with my digetion .
A lot of water loss ,if you know what i mean and hence, I now suspect electrolytes.
Continued during today and the reduction in twitches has been to about 10% of what they were in occurence and strength. My calf does not feel like a mass of wriggling worms but 'normal' with the very occassional twitch but very minor.
I know there are many false dawns in all this but it's good to have had a relatively normal day. It could also be that i havent drunk tea--- Today has been a good day - i'm just happy about that !

:D)
Monday- horrendous day at work and i've hardly noticed any twitching at all... This can't be by coincidence surely ? There is a marked and significant improvement by about 90% .I'm not joking.
I have to say that i'm sure when i was 'normal' or pre-bfs I had more twitches than I did today.

Pete
