Quinine Pills Help Reduce Twitches

I went to my doctor and he gave me a prescription for Quinine pills – he said they might help and they did.

Anyways, I took one before relaxing yesterday evening, because my twitches were driving me mental. About one half hour later my twitches gradually slowed until almost non-existent and they were replaced with kind of a warming feeling – I had to take my socks off because my feet got hot. Also, at about 2:30 AM I woke up and it took me a couple of minutes to get back to sleep - this is rare for me.

Anybody else take Quinine? What have your observations been?

Quinine is normally for cramping....
interesting that it seemed to help the twitching..
A neurologist told me long term use of it causes irreversible deafness and so it is no longer available over the counter as it used to be....and should be monitored closely.

I was wondering about that medication. My mother-in-law takes it for Restless Leg Syndrome. She said it has helped her immensly. I used to get the cramps pretty bad in my toes. When I would stretch my big toe it would cramp horribly. I have also had a few in my calf. They seem to have subsided though. I take Ambien to get to sleep and it works like a gem. I still able to function at night. (Due to the fact I have a 3 year old who refuses to sleep through the night) I don't always get 8 hours and haven't noticed any bad side effects.

The not sleeping at night was killer it was making my twitched 10x worse so that has helped.

I've been using quinine sulfate (260 mg as needed) for over 2 years. I usually take it for cramping during exercise (I would get nasty cramps in my calves while running), but haven't needed it as much lately.

I never noticed a decrease in twitching while using quinine. I can also hear fine after using it "as needed" for a couple of years, but I wish I was deaf when my kids are fighting!!!

Has anyone used Requip? It is used for RLS, and I was wondering if anyone has got their physician to prescribe it for BFS.

I did the quinine thing for a while. It did help with the twitches but I had severe ringing of the ears. Bad enough that I took the twitching over the ringing and quit taking it. If it is helping you keep on taking it but like some of the others have cautioned proceed with extreme care.
