Questions About Unusual Twitching

Hi guys. First, I am so happy for Ginny. I was praying for her and excited to see she was fine.

I have a question. I have been twitching for three months now with no weakness or throat problems. No wasting that is real as sometimes I think I see wasting but it never goes anywhere. Saw a neuro + three GPs who all said it was not to worry about after bloodwork and 2 mris.

Recently, I have noticed all of my fingertips are wrinkled badly - like an old person though I am just 40. Plus I see some like small red sores. I found one other posting about this from a panic stricken woman who was sure that was als. I have searched but can't find anything.

Does anyone know about this?

Thanks.

Hi.

When my BFS was at its worst, I noticed the same "pruned" finger tips.
I was told by two physicans that this is a classic symptom of anxiety, which of course i did not believe.

Anyway, I still get this symptom sometimes.

ME ME!! I have this too from time to time.

Sometimes I also get tiny tiny water-blisters on the tips of a couple of my fingers. The skin will get a little raw and peely too. Not often though.

Anyway, I have never equated this with BFS, as I've had the finger stuff going on for years now.

My regular GP and a dermatologist I saw to remove some moles both told me it can be a form of eczema (mild) that is brought on by...guess?? Stress and Anxiety!! Somehow I ended up speaking to my grandmother about this, and she's dealt with it too, since she was a teenager, and even her doctor told her it's from stress (and this was years and years ago!)

When I was in high school, I was quite a Type-A student, and I used to get seborrhea (another skin condition) sometimes behind my ear and on my scalp----doctors confirmed it's brought on by stress!

As for the finger thing: cortizone cream and lots of moisturizer will help--especially if your hands are in water a lot (that can make it worse). Also, be careful with the type of soap you use to wash your hands---keep it very mild. The antibacterials can be harsh on your skin.

Hope that helps!

Its so funny you should mention "pruned" finger tips! At the onset of my anxiety and BFS, I swear my hands appeared very wrinkled. I was so sure it was atrophy. When I was finally diagnosed with BFS officially and had my anxiety under control, I noticed my hands looked like everyone else's.

I hope this helps.

Mark:

I haven't had pruny or peeling fingertips, but I have had the occasional tiny blister on a fingertip appear every so often, ever since I can remember. There's something called a herpetic whitlow that according to Google photos looks to be a nasty version of what I experienced. They are common in people in the healthcare field, because they're caused by herpes simplex virus HSV-1 (not the sexually transmitted type, from what I recall).

And...when I went through my first scary dam months of BFS last summer, guess what? I got dozens of the fingertip blisters, and they kept cropping up for months. The little blisters start out red and sore, like you've stuck your finger with a pin. A day later, the blister forms. A few days later, the blister hardens then goes away. Never had nearly so many in my life, and haven't had but a few since then.

I don't know if these fingertip blisters are related to herpes. (Don't have any reason to believe I've been exposed to herpes, although I believe more than half the population has been.) And I don't know whether my bevy of blisters was related to BFS or was instead a result of the extreme anxiety that I suffered when I started twitching. And one of my theories is that BFS is a hyperreactivity of the nerves caused by herpes that's just hanging around. (Ex., another herpes virus - herpes zoster, the same thing that causes chicken pox and shingles - can rest within a person for years only to flare up when the person is under stress.)

If you search here on "blisters," I think you'll read that some others here have also had the little water blisters that Amy described.

Yes. My hands have been cramping on and off for about 3 weeks. I have noticed that my pinky and ring finger look a little wrinkled. Maybe they've always looked that way and I never noticed. Since they started slightly cramping, I have been looking at my hands more closely. I guess the important thing is that my hands still work pretty good. I can do everything that I need to do with them. I guess we shouldn't worry as long as the hands keep working for us.

O.K.I may be missing something, but I don't think there are muscles in our fingertips.Wouldn't als cause the muscle to shrink?I don't think there's any muscles in the fingertips to shrink.Correct me if I'm wrong.

I have never heard or read of someone that had wrinkled fingertips as an ALS symptom, and my neuro said when it begins in the hand, the atrophy starts between the pointer and thumb (meaty part on top of hand)

Hope this helps.

I thought we just had nerve endings in our fingertips.

Ginny

I don't think it is a symptom of als as that would not make any sense. I am thinking more along the lines of a viral infection similar to or herpes. I was just wondering if others experienced it. I get these same small red blisters as is described above. Odd anyway....
