Questioning BFS and Autoimmune Causes

I am just wondering about the 'whys' of my BFS starting. I still think it is probably chronic anxiety related...but this auto-immune thing has got me thinking. I had major lower back surgery in 1992 whuich has resulted in a considerable amount of metal screws and devices taking the place of what used to be bone. Is it possible that my body( via the nervous system) is (now) reacting to these foreign objects, ie rejecting them. And as a result BFS has set in? Anybody else experienced this? Would be very interested to know.cheersRodger

G'day RodgerI think that the back surgery and metalwork could easily cause problems 'downstream' from the nerves in your spine that run adjacent to this area but would not casue problems with nerves 'upstream' i.e. leg fascicualtion could be secondary to lower back surgery but not arm twitching. If your body 'rejected' the metalwork, you would expect to experience pain at that body site and to become quite unwell in yourself. For my part, I have never had back surgery, but get lots of episodes of back pain and I had an abnormality on my EMG which my neurologist said could have been due to back issues. My fasciculation is much worse in the legs than elsewhere so, for my part, I am guessing that my BFS, like many others, was caused by soem combination of a virus and stress and that the BFS has picked out the 'weakest' part of my body.Hope you had a good ANZAC Day, yesterday!RegardsSimon

Thanks Simon-makes sense. Oh well for the theories- back to 'anxiety' one( which is probably right). How are going now after your 'scare' a few weeks back-OK? Docs aren't supposed to get 'sick'...only their patients! :pcheers and stay wellRodgerPS anzac day was good.

Hi RodgerThanks for your post and for asking after me. My symptoms are slightly better at present and I have managed to get on top of the anxiety a little better too.RegardsSimon
