Palatal Myoclonus: Experiences?

Has anyone here had any of these symptoms? I have, so I just wondered:Palatal myoclonus is a regular, rhythmic contraction of one or both sides of the rear of the roof of the mouth, called the soft palate. These contractions may be accompanied by myoclonus in other muscles, including those in the face, tongue, throat, and diaphragm. The contractions are very rapid, occurring as often as 150 times a minute (it doesn't last this long on me, but I have something simular to it), and may persist during sleep. The condition usually appears in adults and can last indefinitely. People with palatal myoclonus usually regard it as a minor problem, although some occasionally complain of a "clicking" sound in the ear, a noise made as the muscles in the soft palate contract. Sleep myoclonus occurs during the initial phases of sleep, especially at the moment of dropping off to sleep. Some forms appear to be stimulus-sensitive. Some persons with sleep myoclonus are rarely troubled by, or need treatment for, the condition. However, myoclonus may be a symptom in more complex and disturbing sleep disorders, such as restless legs syndrome, and may require treatment by a doctor.

Yeah I definitely have that. I do this involuntary swallow thing and get the clicking in the ears too. I usually get it when I am most anxious, like today for instance :(

Yes, I have had that off and on for 3 years now in conjunction with non-stop twitching in the calves and feet and random elsewhere. Unless the PM *never* stops then it is benign...otherwise it indicates a lesion in a specific area in the brain.

You sound as though you have seen a doctor about this? A lesion, where? It mainly only does it when I am trying to go to sleep. It is a night time only thing. Thanks, Anne

Thanks Mike, good to know. The tongue tingle and twitch on the left happens off and on daily. But it wasn't as bead this weekend. I go to the neurolgist May1 st...I am going to take this site info with me.Anne B

I've been having myoclonus at night for several months. The arms and legs don't really frighten me too much, (it's just hard to get to sleep). It's the facial myoclonus, forward, mouth, etc., also have the swallowing at night thing. Does anyone have the sleep facial myoclonus & know if it's considered normal for sleep myoclonus? Thanks, Denise

Well, my upper lip twitches very strongly and then there I the tongue too. I have made a choice to trust this last doctor and let this go, at least for now. I have also decided to take a vacation and relax. I need something to break away from the day-to-day. May be then i can get some relief.
