New Hot Spot on Thumb Muscle Twitching

Hi everyone,I've been twitching for a little over two years, but have now gotten a new hot spot that is worrying me.My right hand's thumb/thenar muscle has had a hot spot for about two days that won't go away. It is twitching about once a minute and really has me freaked out, because I have never twitched in this spot before. I'm not much of a hand twitcher in general, so the difference in my symptoms makes me think that it could be something bad.My right arm/hand also frequently feel tired out or weak, so tying the two together scare me.Any thoughts on this? I never had my arms EMGd, so don't feel as confident as I do when my legs twitch. Is this just part of BFS?Mitra

I've probably read 100 posts that are a carbon copy of this. Try to get over this new irrational fear by keeping the facts in view:1. In BFS, you can and should expect that every muscle will twitch eventually. I don't care if its 2 years after onset or 20 years....new spots happen.2. The experience when limbs "feel tired or weak" is NOT something associated with ALS. Clinical weakness does not produce this sensation.3. Its easy to accept a BFS diagnosis, but 100% squashing the ALS fears sometimes takes a while as is with you. The lingering fear is sometimes perpetuated by the flawed rationale that our symptoms seem to benign but maybe this next symptom will be "the one" which points toward ALS. The truth is that there is NO new symptoms that will change your story from one of BFS to one of ALS. It is already a fact that ALS cannot be the cause of your symptom pattern for soooooo many reasons. ALS is bound by the laws of nature to act in certain ways....it cannot work miracles. You 100% have BFS just like me and everyone else. Once we have BFS, it can never turn into ALS. That's the truth.

Okay, I'm going to sound like a total newbie here. But, I was never officially diagnosed with BFS.I so wish I could gain your confidence Johnny. I was really hoping you'd reply because you often knock sense into me.I just wonder because of my arm and hand weirdness the past few months, that my hand might be slowly deteriorating. I know, it's been two years, but I always wonder if i'm the anomaly. Probably like everyone else with health anxiety wonders if they are.I have totally gotten used to my calves and feet twitching. In fact, they truly are background noise, and don't bother me in the least. But new things, especially hot spots really freak me out.Mitra

Hi Mitra,I had the exact same thing happen to me about a month ago. My thumb would twitch off and on for a week, I thought it would never go away. Well it has and hasn't returned, I guess it was a hotspot. Sometimes I think I have some back or neck issues that flare up because I get twitches and pains from my shoulder to my hand. I also have a stiff and painful right hand that feels weaker than my left.I've also never been diagnosed with BFS, nor have I had an EMG. You're not alone, I have the dreaded health anxiety as well and know how fear can always take the place of rational.Hang in thereJay

Jaj,Considering your hand is painful, it's likely you have some sort of carpal tunnel syndrome. I almost wish I had pain associated with this, I think I would be more calm about it.Did yours twitch like once a minute, or just on occasion?mitra

The pain has actually been there way before the twitching started so I don't know if it's related. My mom had carpal tunnel but never experienced any twitching. It was actually going non stop for say 5 minutes, stop, and then resume like 10 minutes later. It did that all week and it was freaking me out because I had absolutely no control over it. I'm not familiar with the anatomy terminology, but I seen a twitch between the pointer and middle finger while my thumb was moving. I also had a twitch on the base of my thumb on the palm side, making my thumb move.

I so hope this stops. Mine is similar, when I use my hand the twitching stops, but as soon as I stop to use the mouse or am relaxing (the worst!!) - it twitches once every minute or so, non-stop. I can't sleep because of it.I played ping pong with my husband at his family reunion, and this happened shortly after. I wonder if there is any relation. The part that freaks me out is the general "tiredness" of my right arm in general. Like shampooing my hair makes my whole arm tired. I don't remember my arm being like this a year ago.Mitra

I'm having a bad day today as well! It's annoying, but you have to realise it's just a phase and it will be gone at some point. I wish I had a few years of twitching behind me! Then I would know it's nothing serious :)

Thanks so much for your responses. My thumb twitch stopped for a whole half hour yesterday and I thought it was gone, but then it came back and it's still here today. It's just odd that it's hanging on this long. And it's definitely triggered by activity. Like after I type, it twitches a few times. I really hate this.

So, I'm on day 6 of this. Yesterday, my thumb only twitched maybe 10-20 times the entire day, so I thought it was getting better. To put it in perspective, my foot will twitch that much in an hour. Then, lo and behold, the first twitch I felt this morning while waking up was my thumb.I can't get over that maybe this is the sign of something bad. I know that's silly to say, but I really haven't dealt with a hot spot for this long ever. For those of you who have had a hot spot, how do you define it? Like a twitch every minute, every second, every hour - what? And how long has it gone for?I'm focusing on my thumb so much, but it's just odd and I want it to stop.Mitra

Thanks Suzi! So, you don't get hot spots any longer? Or do you, but just not as often? What do you think changed? As stressless pointed out my calves and feet twitch 24/7, and it's turned into background noise. It's not the same spot, but twitches all over. Somehow I've gotten used to that. But when it focuses on one specific spot, it's very unnerving to me.Your post really made me feel better, though. Thanks so much.Mitra

Guys,I made a huge mistake and started googling. I often can't see my thumb muscle twitch, it's really small and doesn't happen frequently enough.Could this be a fibrillation?? I read that you can't see fibrillations and they happen in one muscle only, which is what is happening to me.Please help!!!Mitra

Well said Johnny about googling. I was googling "irritated nerve" (hoping to find a cure for my twitching thumb -- I know, dumb) and ran across a Popular Science article about muscle twitching and read it. In the article it said twitches you can feel but not see can be fibrillations, and I lost it.Anyway, I continued to google and saw some more sites where doctors say that fibrillations cannot be felt, so if anyone is freaking out about my post, please know that I think the stupid article I read was written by some layman and not a doctor (and it's pretty careless, I must say, to say such things in an article).Just hoping that one of these days my thumb will cease it's twitching and return to its normal state. It's driving me batty (obviously).Mitra

Well, Mitra, do you remember last year JUST THIS time I complained about persistent thumb twitch 24/7? It lasted for 14-20 days with no relief. I could not even sleep because my thumb was twitching :( I had to put my hand behind my ass so it was so compressed that I didn't feel it so good.Good news is it just went away. Then there came another twitches and another, and sometimes my thumb twitches few hours but the 2 weeks 24/7 in thumb is for now not there any more.I know how you must feel, because I've been there a year ago ;-( The foot tiwtching I could make a background noise (they are constant), but the thumb twitching was different, I could not sleep. And having hand near my eyes did not help either!Take care, it WILL go AWAY!

Jerry,It's so good to hear that yours went away. I'm getting close to 2 weeks (8 days now) and am losing my mind. I keep thinking it must be something bad because this has never happened to me before (a hotspot that lasts this long). I had one day where the twitches weren't that frequent, so I was hopeful, but then yesterday it was twitching once every minute or so.Thanks for reminding me about your hot spot. I do remember you being concerned about it last year, so I'm so happy to hear it actually went away.Mitra

Mine is exactly on the side of my thumb. A very small muscle, but it's loving to twitch! I had some pins and needles in my arms/hand today so I do wonder if I irritated something. It's good to hear from you, Jerry!! It's been a while...Mitra

I have the same problem but in my hypothenar I pay so much attention to it now ... that I can basically make it twitch by pulling in and releasing the muscle then for few seconds it will move .... luckily I did same thing with my left hand and almost similar result ... so hmmm God knows why . I also have pain in my right hand an forearm and creepy sensations I feel veins tnedons ... under skin , but hand got little better lately ... I just started twitching june 18 first toes ....in a week all over even face ! but twitches are almost always in different locations ...so this hypothenar thing is not fun ....but what u gonna do....don't worry! Jo

Oh, that's so nice Jerry! I really appreciate your support. But, I'm sad to hear that you're still coughing. It just has to be allergies/GERD/ or something to be so persistent!Yes, my thumb is still 24/7 and it's really bringing me down. I think I'm going to surpass hot spot records soon (although some people have them for months - I'm doubting they are as persistent as this one). The thing that makes me worried is that the rest of my body may not be twitching as much, but my thumb will continue to go on...Also, I've noticed a lot of tingling in my hand. Starting to make me worried that there is some nerve damage or carpal tunnel or something. But, I'm really avoiding seeing a neuro, because I can't handle the anxiety...Mitra
