Help - Need BFS Advice

help, I need advise from you pro-bfs'ers . i had a baby september 2002, and since January 2003, i have been a twitcher. my pregnancy was not without complications: bedrest 4 months prior to delivery, an enormous blood loss, witin a couple of points of a blood transfusion, a 50 pound weight gain. I went to general practioner in january for twitching, and he dismissed it, went again in february, he referred me to neurologist . the quack i went to told me i could possibly have als, even though all my clinical strength tests were normal. i didn't like his bedside manner, so i went to another. this neuro, gave me a clinical exam, and wanted an emg, and blood tests. all negative, thank goodness!! but he wanted to see me again in 2 months. still twitching, i went. this time clinical findings were the same , no weakness no problems of any kind. he wanted to do an MRI and more blood work. All findings negative, in fact, for a 34 year old dental hygienist, it was surprisingly perfect . i asked about the possibility of als and he said he sees about one person a week like me in his office. he seems to think it is bfs. i am new to this and very scared. i stay on the computer reading all the time. can anyone confirm this diagnosis? my symptoms started as a twitching thumb and then the arches in my feet, then calves, then all over. my legs and arms felt week for about 5 days , almost like rubber. even feels like something pushing from inside out (little kicks). i have noticed a shock-like feeling in hands if a certain area is pressed on or accidentally hit. i have felt lots of anxiety over the last few months, with a new baby, fear of ALS . are these symptoms normal for bfs , from what i have read, they are, but unsure about the shock-like feelings? HELP PLEASE!!

Hi Amy,

I can't believe your first neuro suggested the possibility of ALS and didn't even bother following through with an EMG. I'd definitely listen to your second neuro. Your symptoms sounds like BFS to me. I have yet to hear of anyone going on to get ALS with a clean EMG and a clean neuro exam.

I also get the exact same "shock-like" or "electrical" feeling in my hands...I actually notice it most when I press on part of my wrist/forearm. It kind of comes and goes for me, so I've really never worried about it that much.

Take care,

Hi Amy
I agree with diotz2, the second neuro you saw did an appropriate workup . A negative neuro exam, negative labs and a negative EMG rules out ALS. Your symptoms are consistent with BFS, shocks and all.

Hi Amy...

You definetly have BFS. Don't let that quack scare you by telling you that you might have ALS. There is no way with a clean EMG and neuro work-up. The tingling in your hands may be due to carpal tunnel syndrome...I bet you have a lot of repetitive movements of the wrist in your job.

Take care! Enjoy that baby :D)

I am so relieved to hear that the shock-like feelings are normal when dealing with bfs. when reading the other posts, i didn't read that as a common symptom. i also have lots of humming internally. i want to have another baby, but am afraid that it will get worse. thanks for all your help maybe i can sleep better now..
