Handling Fear and Anxiety in BFS

Dear all, first of all a happy and healthy new year 2012 to you and your family. I am nearly (February) 3 years in the whole BFS stuff, but still get new symptoms. I thought I could handle my fears well at this time, but one new symptom pushed me again over the hump. Had two clinical examinations and two EMG´s the last 3 years, which all were according the neuro well. I had this random tongue twitches, like a few seconds on the tip or the side of my tongue, but two days ago on the surface of my tongue (only on the half tongue) there was a strange back and forth movement. I was there for nearly one hour and disappeared. My wife saw it, and said it was like a fasziculation not like a worm like movement, but I fear it was like fibrillations. I have such big fears, as my wife is expecting our second son and I have this big big fears that it all will progress to the worst and I cannot see my sons grow up. My question, does somebody know how fibrillations on the tongue look like. I heard they are on the surface. Always the whole surface or also on one half of the tongue? Once if the tongue has fibrillations, do they stay or do they also go away, like fasziculations? Please let me know. I thank you all in advance. Have a good day.

Hey,I've had these kind of contractions on the tongue, especially the tip and on the side as well. I've had them all - you are welcome to review my previous posts. For the past 2 months I've had ongoing tongue twitches and this isn't the first time for me where the tongue is a hot spot. I consider myself as a veteran - 4 years of BFS (the initial symptom that got me to see a neurologist was my tongue twitches). Some doctors didn't believe me, while others claimed it was merely abnormal tongue movements (especially those contractions). I've had 4 clean EMG's and so many neuro visits... All clean. There are many of us tongue switchers here on the board. I hope this fact in itself gives you some peace of mind :) May

May, and have you classic tongue fasciculation? I mean clearly visible flickering in one tiny place, usually lightly felt and typically on the sides..?

Race,You don't have ALS. You just don't. In three years you would be worrying about a lot more than a weird movement of the tongue. I don't mean to trivialize it because these twitches are probably the most alarming to us which I think is mainly a result of incorrect or conflicting information on the Internet. My tongue has twitched for nearly 7 years on and off...I'm still fine.May I suggest and also hear my own advice - don't worry about seeing your children grow up. Instead be in the present moment where their energy and life abound. I lost 2-3 years of my kids life worrying about a disease that had never gripped me. Don't make that mistake - I regret that loss deeply. Be well,Mark

As I said - I've had them all, small fasics, hit & run, contractions and so on.I have additional symptoms as well, especially severe swallowing issues that may be caused by acid reflux and may be of a different origin (perhaps even neurological), but I do know that this isn’t ALS. It simply does not make sense (for so many reasons) – and it shouldn’t to you either.Believe it or not I’m not even freaking out about this (perhaps I should :D) ) – and again, neither should you. Please do listen to Mark and simply live your life. It is really as simple as that.Regards,May
