Girlfriend Has BFS: Explanation?

I did have herpes gladatorium, which if you look it up only wrestlers really get it. It is common in my community, but it is not HSV 1 or HSV 2 per se. I tested negative for both of those. Funny thing is though on my test results it did show positive for a viral infection, just not HSV 1 or HSV 2.

Herpes is herpes regardless of type. You don't ever get rid of it. Sounds like you passed the gladitorium to your g/f.Herpes doesn't cause BFS. BFS is the body's response to a pathogen or some sort of irritant. Everyone is different.

herpes is not herpes regardless of type...i tested neg for hsv 1 and hsv 2...u can not give gladitorium through sex....my gf tested neg as well. I wish I kind of did have it, at least it would have explained some things. But I just don't.

I will say that after much research my belief is that bfs is caused by an irritaion to the neuromuscular junction. Whether it's antibiotic use, virus or stress. High levels of chronic stress releases tons of cortisol and other chemicals. It is very possible that is what is messing with me. The fact still remains that Gary and others on here have done a lot of research on it and concluded that it has something to do with potassium channels. Nueros have suggested viruses and other things. No one knows and the only people that get on with their lives are the ones who stop caring and just move on.

Randy-I'm actually reading about electrolye imbalances at school right now and a Magnesium or Potassium deficiency can cause muscle twitching, cramping, and odd sensations like tingling in your hand and feet. I also had low potassium at one point before the twitching started.Sorry to hear about that powder...lol

My girlfriend also started twitching wildly a few months after me. Screw anxiety, in the subset of us where this happend it clearly points to an external factor. Virus, bacteria, toxins, diet etc. It also means its not autoimmune for these cases because its highly unlikely for 2 people to have the same genetic predisposition to the same pathogen. If your life changes overnight without reason you can be calm only if your'e on strong drugs ... I wonder how doctors react to this stuff, don't they check for causes, don't they get anxious? Its just a normal response to the unknown. 4 months before bfs i had shingles on my chest and after that cold sores on my lips every month like clockwork to this day. I wonder if antivirals would work like acyclovir?

Saw this thread and just wanted to comment quickly, I've wondered myself about the potassium issue, I tested low-K several years prior to any symptoms although the levels been normal the last 3 years.About one year prior to the blowup of my BFS-type symptoms, I came down with horrible heart palpitations (skipped beats), at their worst several within a minute to the point where I'd be short of breath. Cardiologist workup was completely normal, said I have the heart of an athlete, go figure - no solution unfortunately. I tried every vitamin to no avail, finally I stopped using added table salt and replaced with a potassium salt substitute (tastes like s*it) and they were gone. The heart of course is very sensitive to potassium and electrolyte imbalances.Unfortunately supplementing potassium and magnesium have done nothing for my BFS crap, but I have to wonder if some issue with the K-channels predisposes us to this nonsense. The other standout in my blood work is consistently low white blood count starting 2 years ago. Exactly on the bottom of the acceptable range, which I understand can be a sign of an autoimmune issue. My immune system seems to work fine, last time I came down with even a slight cold was maybe 3 years ago - but I have to wonder if it's all connected somehow.

I realize this is an old post but I'm relatively new to this forum and have been reading through some of these old threads which have been really informative and helpful. Anyway, I came accross this one and just had to reply.I am 38 years old and have had outbreaks of herpes gladiatorum for the past 20 years. I picked it up on the wrestling mats in high school in 1991 and then went on to wrestle in college as well which only made things worse because I had frequent outbreaks. And for the past 20 years, I have had at least one outbreak a year (usually 2 or 3). It always happens when I get too much sun. I've read a few other posts which speculate that herpes may in fact hide dormant in your nerves between outbreaks. Not saying herpes causes bfs, but this is such a coincidence to me since I now have widespread twitching, like many others with a history of herpes. I'm sure if we all got in a room we together we could find many things in common that could potentially explain the cause of bfs but I thought this one in particular was very interesting.-Matt

My husband actually had it first, but I got the worst case of it. Flippin figures! Lol.This supports a post-viral, auto-immune etiology, and I don't think it is cause for alarm. If anything, it proves that it is nothing sinister.:)Both of us have tested positive for Epstein Barr, coxsackie B, and Parvo-virus in the past. Any of these, as well as HSV can cause neurological sequelae. These things are generally self-limiting and eventually go into remissions, with flare ups during times of stress, or immune compromise. There have been many bfs couples, over the years. Blessings,Sue

Are the potassium levels checked with blood work? My blood work all came back normal. This is sooo interesting. I just have to post that I have struggled with heart palpatation for about 15 years now. I have also been hospitalized for Epstein Barr and I have also had shingles...about 6 years ago. This is just too weird....maybe there is a connection.Tanya
