Discussing Recent Student Protests

Hey twitches,Came across this listening to the radio today, I guess it's making headlines, want to see what you guys all think, thought's and opinions are appreciated, thought it would be a good subject for discussion. Maybe these student's need to be directed to the BFS Community!

I read about this the other day. Sounds like whatever it is hit them like it hit me. One minute is wasn't there and the next it had taken over. I will be following this closely to see what happens. I think it would be highly unlikely to hit so many of them in the same way so fast and just be something psychological. Very interesting.

There was a woman on this forum, Medusa13, who suspected her twitching may have been environmental, like pesticides if I'm not mistaken, only because it happened to her husband and I believe her kid(s) at about the same time. Obviously different from most people here. I don't think the girls in the report were "twitching" like us, but more of a motor tic, like tourette syndrome.

I was going to create that topic as well:) this is very scary story, watching these girls I feel their pain. But I wouldn't look for big conection, they dont seem to have pains and all the crap we have beside twitching. Also, it's hard for me to imagine that all of them tarted having symptoms in the same day....

Thanks for your responces.I also think that what they have differ's from BFS, seeing that some students have motor tics that are visible. A few students did complain about twitches, the whole story just makes me curious....

Interesting. As for mass 'hysteria' (<-- the psych community can beat me up later), I never believed in hypnosis until I experienced it first hand and had to open my eyes to just how suggestible I really was (irony included.) So I won't rule a group suggestibility as a possibility. None-the-less, I don't blame the parents for wanting a less dismissive investigation. What stands out for me is that IF this is some kind of cluster suggestion (like yawning), then it is interesting that it could persist for months rather than the usual 'everyone in school got nauseous because of the gas leak' hysteria that happens every year or two. Glad they have outside investigators looking to rule out other causes. Important for the community to do this.

The latest I heard (on Dr. Drew) is that the students were being treated with antibiotics and steroids for PANDAS, a strep infection that affects the brain. Most of the girls were showing improvement, but a psychiatrist cautioned that it could be a placebo effect. Here is a link:

From what I see in this video when I see this girls, the word TWITCHING is ABUSED. This is no twitching, this is some kind of seizures or myoclonus jerks, twitching does not make you go like you are hit with a 500 volts of electricity...

I've been following this for a while, so thanks for the link to recent material. I agree that "twitching" is used very loosely on the video, though maybe some of the affected people are having fasciculations. Here, of course, we talk about fasciculations even though we use words like "twitch" or "spasm" to describe them. After all, this is AboutBFS, and it's quite certain that we are not as a group suffering from mass-psychogenic illness or PANDAS. I'm quite a bit older than the adults shown in the video, and have had BFS almost as long as some of the girls have been alive. But this is a fascinating situation. Has AboutBFS ever had a member whose BFS was treated successfully with antibiotics and/or steroids?
