Bit Tongue As I Sleep?

I'm not sure if this is BFS related, anxiety related, or TMJ related... but does anyone else bite their tongue as they drift off to sleep? I've done this periodically over the past year but lately I've been biting the *beep* out of my tongue. My jaw just clamps shut as I drift off and I'll either wake up to a sharp pain in my tongue because I just bit it, or I wake because I just clamped my teeth together narrowly missing my tongue. I was just laying down for a nap and I did this about 5 times in the span of 30 mins. Anyone have any insight on this?

more the inside of mouth although I do bite my tongue as well sometimes. I always figured that was part of my TMJ issues. My dentist wants me to start wearing a mouth guard at night.

Yes i get that periodically and also bite inner cheek dont know either but my mum has it too, we remark to each other at times about it like you say the jaw clamps down and painful if caught.

Sounds to me like TMJ. Have you considered getting a mouth guard at night from a dentist? Sorry to hear about the new symptom. New symptoms here too. Wonderful world this BFS is. :)

This symptom is not really new... been happening for almost a year, just more frequent. My dad is a dentist and he made me a mouthguard but this is different than TMJ. This is not a grinding, it is a very quick contraction of the jaw. It just snaps shut quickly and then relaxes.

Would this be considered 'jaw jerk' reflex action? I am not a doctor, I just play one on TV. I found a few other threads on this forum of people talking about the 'jaw jerk' reflex being abnormally strong. Seems to be another symptom within the realm of BFS.

I had this happen to me last night Matt! I believe its just a jaw jerk or something. I hope it does not become a regular thing for me, but I did bite my tongue pretty hard as I drifted off last night.

Katie, this has been a regular occurance for me over the past few weeks. I had this happen to me a lot back in December and then it stopped for about 5 months. Now, its happening to me every night. Somehow my tongue ends up rested between my teeth and my jaw snaps down on it as I'm drifting off. I wake up to a quick pain in my tongue and realize that I just bit it. I've also noticed that the place I always bite my tongue is the same place I get that contracting tongue twitch (the one in my videos). I'm wondering if constantly biting my tongue in that spot has irritated the nerve so much that it is causing that frequent twitch. Hmmm.-Matt

Katie-I could be something like large limb jerks but just taking place with your jaw muscles. Often when I am falling asleep I will awake suddenly because my leg or arm just JERKS suddenly and violently for no reason. And I am becoming convinced after reading posts on here that our jaw muscles can be affected by BFS... I have TMJ problems really badly where sometimes I can't open my mouth to eat.. and I have read many posts where other BFS people have TMJ problems also... coincidence? I think not! :)

MattThis has been happening to me quite a bit over the last couple of weeks. Has not happened to me in the past that I recall. Did it ever let up for you? Not sure if it's just a phase, or if I should talk to a dentist? Thanks

I've been experiencing this regularly since I developed my first BFS symptoms six months ago. I'm kind of a tongue and cheek biter to begin with. I have a long history of this. I also have some really bad, long-standing TMJ problems, too. The tongue biting while drifting off to sleep, however, is a relatively new thing for me. Glad to hear that I'm not the only one!
