Advice for Newbie with Twitches

Hello everyone!I'm a 27-year-old woman who is new to the forum. I know this topic has been discussed in the past, but I was wondering if anyone can send some advice my way.A couple of weeks ago I started experience twitches in my right and left calf muscles. Shortly after that they became widespread in my ear, my feet, my back, my eyelids, my lips and tongue. The first couple tongue twitches I experienced felt just like the other twitches in my body, and they only happened a couple of times. For the most part my body-wide twitches do not happen as frequently, but I still get them daily. I now have a spot in my tongue that has been constantly pulsing for the past week. It is a small round spot just slightly to the left from the middle of my tongue, and it pulses about every ten seconds. When I stick out my tongue it becomes more prominent, and I have what feels like an electric "zing" when it pulses. When I look at my tongue in my mouth at rest it still flickers, but not as strong and I cannot feel it when I am not looking. My family members have seem what I am talking about. Has anyone else had this same experience? I am not sure if I should go to a neurologist about just this symptom, as I do not have any fatigue, weakness, atrophy, or problems speaking/swallowing. I know I should not obsess about this movement, and that my anxiety about it probably making it worse. I just don't know if I should spend the money to see a doctor about this pulse, or try to wait it out. Any words of wisdom are very much appreciated! Thanks!Ilanna

I have been through exactly what you are going through except my journey started in July 07. I went from calves to all over including tongue in weeks. Everything is still the same and I have still not developed any weakness. I unfortunately have to take Klonopin for the discomfort my nerve issues started to cause almost immediately as the twitches came. You should be very thankful you have no discomfort. I think your thinking is very logical. It is not really necessary to go to a doctor if things do not progress or interfere with any function. It will likely be a needless expense, just cause more anxiety, etc. It is fascinating that so many go through this strange occurance. Luckily this website exists so we know we are not alone.Krackersones

Hi and welcome,I'm a lucky tongue twitcher myself (almost 2 years). You could look up my history on this board and you'll find lots of tongue twitchers.Everything you describe sounds more than familiar to me. Ive had a variety of tongue twitching including the pulse type - this was in fact my first hot spot on the tongue and it lasted 3 months non stop (well eventually it stopped thank god), contractions, flickers, hit &run, thumpers, you name it.Since you do not have any speech issues/swallowing (which appear way before the fasics) I strongly suggest to do whatever you can to ignore this. Yes I know how tough this is, but once I was convinced that this is nothing ominous that is when my tongue stopped twitching. Don't get me wrong, I still get them, but not as bad as the beginning of this ordeal. If you feel the urge to see a neuro do so, but promise yourself that once you receive the benign diagnosis (which Im sure you will) put this behind you. DO NOT try to further investigate or you will drive yourself mad!And YES, anxiety makes it so much worse. You are fine, trust me.May

Thanks very much May. The all over twitches did not bother me so much, it is this pulse that I cannot feel that freaked me out. I am trying my best not to think about it, and it is comforting to know that you have experienced the same thing!

jawshater,I mistyped. This started for me in July 08. I wish I had another year behind me but 16 months is still pretty long. Also be glad you can't feel your tongue weirdness. I feel mine and they are jarring no matter how minor they are. I get them at least a few times a day. You seem to have the right temperment for this stuff and should surf through this no problem. But I do hope you come back and shoot out a message every year or so to reasurre others. The more tongue twitch survivors the better as this seems to be one of the more anxiety provoking symptoms but interestingly not that uncommon on here.Krackersones
