Why Take Klonopin over Xanax?

I'm wondering why some of you people take Klonopin instead of Xanax?? Xanax tends to have less side effects like drowsiness and stuff. Is there a reason that most of you seem to be on Klonopin instead?

I don't know if it's my imagination but Klonopin seems to reduce the twitching more than Xanax does and for me anyway I need less Klonopin than I do Xanax to calm me which means I would think I will be able to wean faster. Plus with Klonopin I have more of an even keel with calmness than I did with Xanax. I go longer before needed Klonopin and can take less.

Klonopin is an anti-seizure drug in addition to the relaxing effect. This works on reducing twitches although my neuro said there are better anti-fasciculation drugs than Klonopin. I'm not sure if Xanax has this anti-seizure component to it.

When I asked my neuro how Klonopin worked he said it worked in a number of different ways (I think he meant on twitches and on anxiety alothough he didn't elaborate). Also, I've read Klonopin is longer lasting that xanax which wears of quicker.

Does it mean you have ALS if Klonopin doesn't take the twitches away totally? I took one .5 about an hour ago and my butt is still twitching like crazy. not much in the legs today though.

I'm not sure I can say it reduces it 80% like most people say but I guess it's better than Xanax.

Any thoughts?

There is NO WAY it "means you have ALS" if the klonopin doesn't take away all the twitching. While it helps me considerably, I still twitch a lot while on it - this is because I twitch a tremendous amount without it. Also, I have read that Klonopin only works for twitches about 1/2 the time. In other words, 1/2 the people who take it for bfs will not get relief from it.

Remember, my neuro said that "it is not the best anti-fasciculation drug out there" but he prescribed it for me because he thought my high anxiety was triggering the twitching - this is probably why klonopin worked for me - maybe it took away some of the stress related twitching and left me with the rest.

Try it for a few days and see how it goes. It may build up in your system and work a bit more as the days go by. I hope it does make you feel better, but even if it doesn't this does not change the fact that you have BFS.

Just to state a fact, no medicine works to stop fascics in all people. There is no cure for BFS that works for every person. Many have had results with benzo's (xanax, valium, klonopin), anti-seizures/epileptics (tegretol, trileptal, dilantin, neurontin) and many others. Some people have even had good results from magnesium/calcium, B vitamin supplements.

If you take a medicine that doesn't help with your BFS, don't be surprised or worried. It just means that your BFS doesn't respond to that particular medicine or any meds for that matter.

That is the unfortunate truth, sometimes nothing can be done about BFS. I've personally tried benzo's, trileptal, neurontin and nothing helped. I 've come to the realization that the best treatment for this crap is the passage of time and the acceptance that it is what it is, benign fascics. Nothing more, nothing less.

Take care,

Gary
