Why Do Symptoms Worsen After Drinking?

I don't think anyone knows for sure but I have seen the effect of alccohol on twitching referred to again and again on this site. I couldn't possibly comment of course since I never drinking too much (yeah, right!) But I would guess that, because alcohol is nown to be a neurotoxin it presumably temporarily stirs up whatever is going on with our twitchy nerve endings. Alternatively, it could be that alcohol causes dehydration and this in turn sets the twitching off. Or it could be a bit of both of the above. Either way, nothing to worry abotu any no reason to become teetotal in my opinion!CheersSimon

Interesting. I ended up nailing 6 pints of beer a few nights back, when England played USA in the World Cup. The next day my calfs and lower legs were going crazy, like rabid moles had invaded my lower limbs. It almost looked liked waves and ripples, really quite bizarre.I'm sure it's to do with dehydration and irritation of the nerves. And to top it off, my guts were in a right state after the Doner Kebab (on top of the 7 beers).

The darker liquors have more by-products in them (congeners) from the fermenting process. These are reported to irritate the nervous system and provoke other nasty things like headaches etc for that day-after groggy head feeling. You can look this up - it is not a secret and is supported by some research (LOL probably done by some grad students!). It washes out of your system like most of the other junk we irritate our systems with but if it's all the same to you try vodka the next time. When my pnh was bad I switched over to light liquors and lighter beer and it seemed to help. I agree with the dehydration idea that Simon brought up; try downing water along with whatever you are drinking.

I never really drink only beer but did this last week and had no hangover and no increase of twitches then drank whiskey one night had hangover and mass twitches and other neurological things happen ..... interesting to say the least

I don't notice twitching any more frequently after drinking - but here lately I LOVE drinking, because once I'm drunk, I no longer feel the twitches :) I might be headed for trouble! :)

Some ideas-----Alcohol is a vasodilator - it temporarily increases circulation - why you see florid faces and red noses in some bars. SO maybe it is the increased circulation that calms the twitches? If this were true for all of us then we could just do jumping jacks .....but I have always felt less symptomatic when my circulation was increased - the problem is that you can't keep it at a high level for a long time. The next day feeling worse bfs-wise thing can be a lot of stuff (look on any public health website) thiamine & folate deficiency, effects of the toxins over the amount your body could clear out, slight dehydration as mentioned before in this thread. Maybe if you keep it to a few drinks and keep hydrated - walking that fine line between what feels good now and what later feels bad - it will work for you.
