What is a Sleep Start?

Hi everybody. I was just wondering if anyone can tell me what a "Sleep Start" is?? I thought that I knew what is was, and I thought that was what I have been having once or twice a month, where when I am first falling asleep, I all of a sudden feel like I cant breath for a second and I startle awake, and I always scare the *beep* out of my husband, he says I always make a loud gasp for a air sound when I jump up. When I look up the deffenition for sleep start it really just says that its sudden jerking of a limb or limbs, so I'm not sure if thats what I'm having. Any ideas?? Thanks so much for any advice or response.

HiI didn't know that was the name for it, but I used to get that too! I thought it was just me. I would wake up gasping for air and it would startle my husband as well. I got it alot during my pregnancies. Are you still getting them?

tatsu, Yes I do still get them, had a bad one last night and about gave my husband an heart attack, and he's only 24, LOL. I did used to get them alot with pregnancies as well, alot. Now it only happens about once or twice a month. Seems to be something that can be affected by fluctuating hormone levels, since my monthly visitor is due. Dont know what to think about the men who have this problem though, lol
