West Nile Virus Found to Cause BFS

According to an update recently from a neurologist, they are finding more and more "BFS type" illnesses may actually be related to the West Nile Virus. When I went in for my EMG in January they also took blood looking for WNV. When my EMG was normal, he told me that if I didn't have WNV then I have Benign Fasciculations. When it came back positive they told me that explained my symptoms. If you read this: "Your chances of having long-term effects as a result of West Nile Virus (WNV) infection are the same, regardless of whether your infection was mild or more serious, say researchers from the University of North Dakota School of Medicine and Health Science. The most common long-term effects are depression, tremors, fatigue, memory problems, extremity weakness, word-finding difficulty and headaches." In another study, the word tremors was replaced with "movement disorders including myoclonus, tremors, and fasciculations" Just posting for people that may have WNV, might be something to pursue. I come from Idaho which had the most cases of WNV in 2006 in the nation. Lots of mountains and lakes, so it's been pursued here pretty relentlessly. They say on average that it dissipates in roughly 2 years. Might be something to look forward to?Shauna

Thank you for the info.A few years ago, want to sat 2005 I was bitten by several (10+) mosquitoes, then a few days later came down with a very minor flu. I thought nothing of it of the time. Not sure when the Fasciculations started, but i first recall paying attention to them early 2006. The last 1.5 years they have become constant and severe to the point my whole arm will move. Most disturbing is for 2+ years i have suffered form 24/7 odd facial sensations, but never really attributed them to the fasciculations. I have been Dx'd with everything from sinus trouble to Atypical Trigeminal Disorders . Only recently caught my face actually twitching, and the sensation from that is very similar to other Fascis along with a buzzing/burning sensation.I have no doubt i have had BFS, and to a severe degree. All my nero test are clean so i don't fret too much about ALS or MS, but the constant facial buzzing is very debilitating. I have only been sick 2 times in the past 7 or so years, and once was after the mosquitoes, the other just a stomach flu (which the whole family got, nobody has BFS.) Certainly could be a connection, esp since we did have an outbreak of WNV from 05-06 here in NE ohio.I will defiantly bring this up with the Neurologists on my next appt and see what transpires. I pray that the recent severity is just the climax and they will be heading out soon.

Thanks for your post. That is very interesting. I saw an internist a month ago who did loads of bloodwork. One of the things she did test me for was West Nile Virus. I get the results in a couple of weeks. I'll let you know if it is WNV.

i live in pa-- very wooded area.. could be-- but none of my docs gave me a test for it-- is it a standard blood test that you would have to specify??dont they spray for bugs in NE ohio?? i guess that varies by township-- spend a week there each year....
