Hello Everyone,
I just wanted to introduce myself, tell you my story and see if it really is BFS that I may be suffering from. I am a 33 yr old mother of 3 (4yrs, 2yrs and 9 months). In May/June of 2004 I developed a twitch in my left foot (in the arch) that would cause my big toe to bend down toward the bottom of my foot. It would come and go for about 2 weeks and then disappeared. I was symptom surfing one day at the end of July 2004 (bad, bad I know) and I came across twitching and ALS. All of a sudden I decided that I must have it because of the twitching. In the next few days I began twitching all over, having muscle cramps and all sorts of other symptoms. I saw a neurologist in August 2004 (for seizures that I had had in January, not for the twitching) and told him that I was concerned about ALS. He did a physical exam and said that I was fine...I did NOT have ALS. He did not see a need for any further tests (I would have liked an EMG but here you need a dr to order it). I have been twitching all over since but it seems that every few weeks I develop a persistant twitch in one spot that lasts on and off for a few weeks. The latest twitch is in my left hand in the muscle between thumb and index finger. It causes my thumb to move from side to side or my index finger to move. It is very rapid and can last anywhere from a few seconds to an hour. At first it didn't hurt, but lately that muscle has been so sore. My left forearm also aches horribly. This is a huge fear for me and has caused unbelievable anxiety and panic attacks. I am currently on Paxil CR (Xanax when necessary) and seeing a psychologist. I hope this isn't too much information for anyone...I just really need reassurance that I don't have ALS. Thanks.

I forgot to add that the neurologist noted that I had brisk reflexes (all over). He said that they were probably due to anxiety.
Thanks Again

Deanna:

It's great that you've already gotten a "you're OK" from the neurologist. Based on what you've told us, it sure sounds to me like BFS. Your description of the twitching, the cramping, the brisk reflexes, and the aching are all part of the deal. So you were up at 2 am worrying? I know how you feel. That was me a few months ago.

Let us know how you're doing. Even though your symptoms may hang around for a long time, once you "know" you've got stupid old BFS, you'll be able to worry less and ignore your symptoms better.

Search this forum and you'll be comforted by how many stories are exactly like yours...all people who don't have ALS (and have a lot of evidence to prove it).

You can search for my stories, but here's some our similarities.

- Age 35
- Also high anxiety and panic attacks, both prior to and after ALS scare.
- On Zoloft and seeing a therapist.
- Also got a clean neuro aexam and told an EMG wasn;t necessary. I explain (nicely) that I would really like one to put my mind at ease, and he agreed.
- twitching all over
- Aches, cramps, fatigued muscles, tingling. numbness
- Everyone here calls twitching in one spot for awhile a "hot spot"- it's common and I've had hot spots in my bicep and calf.

Oh yeah, I also have brisk reflexes. GP and neuro confirmed this is normal in light of all my other tests. It is not uncommon and more common in anxious individuals. Symmetry is another factor that points to normal.

Welcome Deanna!

I am also a mother of 3 and have been twitching since April. You sound very much like the classic BFS. The "hot spots" are very common to many of us here as well. My 'Hot spot" changes all the time. It started in my face, went to my hands, and is now in my feet. I get twitching in my hands quite often. Just last week, my index finger was going crazy! It was bending from the knuckle down. Did that for a few days then stopped. I get it in the pad under my thumb alot too. I've even had some of my finges "wave" or move back and forth. Don't know why, they just do!

You've already had a neuro tell you that you're OK. Believe him. I know that's easier said than done. Try to relax. Visit here often for support :D)

Take Care,
Barb

Hi Deanna,

Also a mom of 3 here. That's plenty of stress right?! I have hot spots also, from arches of feet to my face and everything in between. I've been twitching since May/June. My neuro did his exam and also said no ominous disease and said no need for emg. Went back for 3 mth checkup and was told the same. It's hard sometimes to take what they say and believe it, but work on it, you will!
