Welcome to Site! Finger Twitching

Hello everyone. I am new to this site, but so very glad that I found it. I am a 40 yr old male in pretty good overall health; I could probably stand to lose 10 or 15 lbs, but hey.About two or so weeks ago I started to notice a twitch in my left middle finger while sitting in front of my keyboard. I really did not give it much thought and just ignored it. Last week however, it became more noticeable and then I decided to do a Google search to see if I could find any reason for the twitch. Well, as all of you know, what I found scared me so bad that my anxiety went through the ceiling (not to mention I have anxiety issues to begin with). Over the next day, I noticed twitching in both my calves, the back of my neck, thighs, right buttock, shoulders, arms, even my upper eye brow. At that point I started to really get scared. During the next weekend, I noticed that I had some very mild numbness in my left arm/elbow and a slight burning sensation which has now ceased. I have noticed the twitches seem to only occur when I am sitting at my desk, on the couch, in bed or the car; basically when I am at rest. Also, they don’t happen all of the time, they seem to come and go. I might go an hour or so and not have one, then have several.Anyway, I went to my GP and she said that she did not believe it was anything serious, but did refer me to a neurologist at my insistence. Unfortunately, I discovered this referred neurologist could not see me until the end of April. When I heard that, I nearly had a breakdown at the thought of having to wait that long, so I found another neurologist who’s receptionist took pity on me and worked me in for later this week. Luckily, I had some left over klonopin and between .5mg x 2 per day and the short wait, I am not having a complete come-apart. After reading here I really feel I am going to be a club member, but still have the overwhelming fear of it being much more serious. Basically, I really wish I could get some reassurances. I have not noticed any weakness or atrophy, although I do feel a little off balance, dizzy (something I have been dealing with off and on for years) and some soreness/joint aches. I have opened as many jars as I can find, walked at least a 25 yards on the tips of my toes, worked out on a elliptical machine every other day or so, etc. I have had pretty bad lower back problems (spurs, etc) for years as well as neck issues too. Another thing that may be coincidence, but about eight weeks ago I had the worst case of flu I have ever experienced, and three weeks after that a bad stomach virus that left me hurting in all of my joints for a couple of days. This stomach issue happened about 14 months ago as well. Really intense for 24 hours then it went away.Anyway, sorry to ramble on, but I am really scared and just looking for words of encouragement.Regards,Michael

Hey there ....welcome to our big corner of th world. It gets bigger everyday. ;) First of all, as I am no doctor, but someone that experiences this crazy twitchy thing....your story starts out like those of many on this forum. I had my first swing with it about October 06 til about Feb 07. It went away....I never freaked out about it. I asked my Doctor about it at a visit when I had walking pneumonia but he said..."nothing to worry with". Ok I thought! It all went away- came back 4 months ago almost. This time as you I GOOGLED  !!!!I went into immediate frenzy. Mine started on the couch about 4 months ago..it was my thigh..*thump thump thump*...then that night I felt some random sporatic ones ALL OVER~!!!!! it wasn't til 4 days later I googled and guess what..I got them worse. As my anxiety heightend so did my twitches-I finally posted and spoke to some WONDERFUL people on this site. They are amazing. A wonderful source of strength and they all know alot about bfs. I finally went to the dr. the first 2 didnt even examine me. I told them my symptoms, they told me what I described was not consistent w/ ***. Sooo I was good with that for a few days until the frenzy set down on me again- I finally got in to see a good GP who while took me light heartedly...he did some strength test and told me I am fine, this is not the presentatio of als etc.Your presentation sounds a lot like mine. Widespread onset. Heck it sounds a lot like thousand of other posters. You seem to have a good grip on this..but no matter the grip!! Its ALWAYS good to hear reassurance every once in awhile.Take Care. Lovely

Good book recommended by my Psychiatrist and Psychologist was or is " The Anxiety and Phobia work book". by Dr.Bourne.Look on Amazon.com. Its great.

Thanks for making me feel better; I really appreciate it! I have read "BFS in a Nutshell" several times and that seems to help. I am praying for a good report from the Neuro and I will deal with things from there. I hope everyone is having a healthy and happy day.Michael

Well, I just returned from my visit with the Neurologist. He has been practicing for 24 years has an MD and Phd, so I feel pretty confident with his abilities. He did some preliminary strength tests, reflex exams, etc and said you don't have **S or MS. Then he related his own experience with twitching and the fear of **S many years ago. To backup his initial assertion, he said that he was going to perform muscle conductivity tests and an EMG. Everything looked fine on both exams with the exception of a small amount of carpal tunnel in my left hand. Considering I am on a keyboard 14 hrs most days, this was not surprising. Before leaving the exam room, he looked at me again and said "No **S, understand?" Now if I can take some time to beat back the flames of the anxiety, I believe I can move on with the twitching or without. Anyone out there suffering from anxiety knows that it does not work like a light switch, but takes a while to mitigate.Regards,Michael

Yeah, I know that I have some nerve damage from the two disc in my neck. I had disc replacement in July 2007. I also have siatica too. You sound as though you have some disc issue and strees as well as having had the flu and virus. Virus' can really play havic (sp?) with your overall health and can cause some nuero symptoms. Share this with your doctor as they will want to run some simple blood test. My guess is it's something treatable. Your always welcome here. and for your own sake, DO NOT search the web anymore ;) God bless,Anne B.

He did order blood work, but made sure to tell me he was not looking for **S indications, but other things that could be indications of other less serious problems. I am going to follow up with my GP in a month and the Neurologist in three months. What I have to begin seriously working on is the anxiety. I have battled this for several years and now feel that I must take a more proactive approach for getting it under control. I am going to find a therapist versed in CBT to work with. Also, I am going to make some big changes in nutrition, exercise and supplements. I pray that all of these together will help me make a change for the better. Finally, lots of people say "google is your friend". In this case, I beg to differ.Regards,Michael
