Hello everyone!

This is a great site! I am a 25 yr old male and I have been reading on here for the past couple of days. I have been VERY nervous about things lately b/c like most of us, I looked up twitching one day on the net, and all I read about is ALS.

First off, I am a major hypochondriac and that is not good to see that stuff on the net. Actually, I have twitched off and on for years, and I never really paid attention. Back in January of 2003, I noticed a hard twitch in my left thigh, and it bothered me for like a day or two. So I was curious and looked up what twitches mean. I was shocked what I saw, and became VERY stressed out. I was convinced something was wrong with me.

I then started to twitch EVERYWHERE, and I focused on them 24/7. I finally made my GP refer to a neuro(he didn't feel I needed to but did to ease my mind). I saw the neuro in early March. The neuro gave me an exam and said I am perfectly fine, and that I shouldn't even be worrying about this stuff, but its hard for me not to. He offered me an EMG for peace of mind only, but he said he will guarantee it would be fine, and he basically said I didn't need one, unless it would offer me peace of mind.

Well I believed him and I never got the EMG. After I talked with him, I felt a lot better, and I dismissed all my fears. He said I had BFS.

Well, as of three days ago, I am getting a constant twitch above my right knee muscle(right above the knee towards the inside). I also, however, get little muscle jolts and pops other places, but this one seems to lasting awhile, and they are very tense sometimes. Is it normal to just twitch in certain places for days on end? Its not constant, but it comes and goes in the same place. I have NO weakness or atrophy, but I am constantly worried now again b/c the same muscle is twitching rather hard.

Although I should point out that it has happened before where a muscle in my other thigh twitched for about a week to ten days off and on. Can someone please fill me in if these twitches types are normal? Is this considered a "hot spot". I also know that in my abdomen, I have twitched off and on in the sameplace for years...probably like 2-3 altogether.

Please help! Thanks

Hi Chad:

Welcome! Your story sounds just like mine and everyone else on this site. I am 23 and have been going through this for over a year now. I went to see a neuro about two months in to everything and he checked me out and said I was fine. This was great for a couple of weeks and then I found myself second guessing him and worried AGAIN that I had something bad.

Your twitching is completely normal. I've had spots that have only twitched once and never again, spots that will be on and off for days at a time, and spots that will be constant for months at a time. The insteps of my feet used to look like popcorn with how much they were twitching. Nothing seems to surprise me anymore...

Trust in your neurologist. I promise you that if he or she was even the slightest bit concerned, they would have put you through every test imaginable. I have spoken with a handful of fairly respectable neurologists and not a single one had ever had a patient come in with twitching alone that went on to get something serious. They know what they're doing.

Take care,

Thanks for replying diotz2!

I have just been worrying a lot lately about this b/c I read that twitching a lot in the same spot is not good, but I do get a lot of twitches elsewhere, but they just come once or twice and then leave. This one I have in my knee(thigh) has been there for days and I was getting worried.

But you are right. I prob should trust the neuro. I was there 3 months ago, and my twitching was BAD at that time, and it has been pretty goos since then, until now.

Thanks again!

Chad

Hi Chad:

Yeah, I've read the same thing before and wouldn't worry about it at all. For the past 2 weeks I have had a twitch in my foot that won't go away and when it does it just comes back in the exact same place. Annoying to say the least. Definitely nothing to worry about, though.

A couple of things - I wouldn't try looking up any on the Internet, because most likely you will find some relationship to something bad. You have BFS and are in the right place. Next, consider it a great sign that your twitching improved for a while - this doesn't happen with more serious diseases.

Read over some of the old posts. They will help you see that your symptoms are very common with everyone else here. Take care.

Hi Chad...

WElcome to the forum. Don't forget to register! Glad to have you here ;) ! You have to keep in mind that your twitches get worse when you worry abou them. So try and relax and take what your neuro said to heart.
Peace, Jen

Hi Chad

What diotz2 says is absolutely right.

I have all these symptoms and more - in my case muscle pain as well. But for me its definately getting better. My neurologist (who works in an ALS unit) said that their patients don't come in complaining of twitches. they do usually have them but they are often noticed by the doctor and are secondary to other problems.

As diotz2 says - trust your neurologist. Theyare the professionals and they are objective. There is a saying in the UK that a man who defends himself in court has a fool for a lawyer. I think this could be rewritten to say the man who diagnoses himself has a fool for a doctor.

I am OK now and I stay on this site now to try to help people avoid having a year like I just have - probably the worst year of my life. Trust your doctor and if you don't, find a doctor you do trust. Get properly assessed and if they say you are OK, then get on with your life.

Als is a rare condition.
Als in people of 25is very rare indeed.
Twitching is a rare presentation of ALS
ALS in people with normal tests is even rarer
etc etc

What this adds up to is ..... you do not have ALS. Its more likely that you will be struck by lightening on the way home from work.

I am however certain that you and probably most of us have a real neurological condition. For me at least its not in my mind. You will get twitches and you may get fatigue, aches, and many more wierd symptoms. And the symptoms are very disturbing. But thats all it is.

Best wishes and don't let it get you down.

Rich
