Welcome Back! Pain & Anxiety

Hi everyone,

Thanks for the concern and replies. LisaLM, thanks for the insight. StephG22, it's good to have you back. "occasins", your pm's are saving my sanity.

Last but not least, Mark. How are you, btw? I feel really selfish lately taking up board space with my fears. The pain has been there for awhile. It's weird. I can walk a little, then the pain sets in. It is also in my ankle now. I don't think there is a "good feeling" muscle in my whole right leg. I ran up a hill (probably only about 1/16 of a mile) Small hill. Anyway, the pain in my hamstring was terrible. I then finished by walking. I don't feel heaviness in my leg, or stiffness, per se. My leg doesn't appear to be "weak", I did a couple of squats, can get up from the floor without using hands, heel/toe test, so far so good.

My mental anguish comes in by the way of "is it finally starting?" You know how it goes. Sometimes just sitting I get shooting pains in my shin muscle (that is nothing new, have had that on/off for a year now) Just that the whole time I was killing myself training for the marathon and cross training, my muscles would get fatigued, sure, but nothing like this. My husband thinks it could be my sciatic (sp?) nerve? I don't know much about that, nor have I had any back trouble that I can remember.

Funny, running down the hill (jogging, btw), I didn't feel any pain. It is only on level and up hills.

BTW, did you enjoy the Steeler's victory?

Ginny,

If it is anything I would guess that you either have sciatica or possibly piriformis syndrome which can mimmick sciatica. I completely blew the disk out between L5-S1 around 5 years ago. My left leg including my foot had problems for over a year. My left hamstring and quads sometimes get stiff and I get cramping in the hamstring and feet. Like you Ginny I sometimes wonder.....

I know every one says not to self test but it's actually therapy for me. Start doing calf raises and squats. Do as many as you can...really push yourself. Wait 2 or 3 days and try again......and decide you will do 2-3 more than your last session....try this over a week or two and you will soon see that of course you are growing stronger or at least not getting weaker.

A couple of other things to consider....try taking 400 - 800 iu of (Natural) vitamin E over the course of a week...it can help cramping. How is your water intake? How about electolytes? Have you had your calcium levels checked? Too much or too little can cause cramping and muscle aches and can also point to problems with the parathyroid or thyroid gland.

Keep your head up and continue to keep us posted.

Paul
