Weeks of Twitching: Should I See a Doctor?

Hi all...I'm trying to figure out if I should go to a doctor. About a 6 weeks ago I had a near constant twitch in my left bicep that went away. Since then I've had occasional twitches all over. I had nothing for about 3 or 4 weeks, and then I started to get twitches in my calf (left and right), my inner quad (left and right), hamstring (left and right) and outer quad (left and right). These tend be be very brief "episodes". Like maybe 5 - 30 minutes at most, with the twitches being very large but in frequent. Like quad twitch, then maybe 10 seconds later another twitch for about 20 minutes. Then I might go a day or a week without a single twitch. The twitches have all so far been large muscle groups. I'm totally perplexed by this. I've looked into all the more awful diseases this could be and it doesn't really seem to fit with anything. Sometimes I can just brush these off, but other times I'll almost have a panic attack about it. Anyone have any thoughts about what if I should see a doctor (I have good health insurance and live in Canada)? And what are the right questions to ask? I've had no other muscular problems (balance, weakness etc..) Thanks!

This condition may be very very hard on your mental condition, as you know are aware of all the dreaded things out there. If no weakness (real weakness) occur then I would say that a visit at a doctor is needless unless you are scared. If you are scared or nervous then visit the doctor. Maybe he can calm you down or give you some medicine that will. You can also go to the doctor if you like to be investigated further with neuros, EMGs and all that but it seems to be a bit overkill as it seems you dont twitch more than normal IMO. Always remember that twitching muscles are almost completely normal. The bad stuff is very, very rare. And the internet NEVER giver you any picture of anything.

Knowing what I know, I am not the least bit concerned with your symptoms. For reassurance, you MAY get some relief by seeing a doctor if the stress from testing everything under the sun doesn't get under your skin. Its up to you.

Emhart,I think where you stand mentally with this determines alot of if you should go to the doctor or not. Your story sounds like so many of ours and does not sound concerning. The thing is that you do not want to waste precious time in your life with unnecessary worry. I worried myself silly for months until I finally saw a neuromuscular specialist and got the all clear. That is time I can't get back and my family suffered as well. Rest assured you are not alone and you will find great support here.
