Waking Up With Tongue Biting

So last night I woke up because I had bit my tongue. It wasn't just the sides.. My teeth like clamped down on my tongue... I've never had this before.. But I know I've seen this before on an *** forum.... Is tongue biting a later symptom... Has anybody else done this before... I know that my jaw is usually very tight during the day because I'm a tense person... Maybe I was grinding my teeth or going to snore.. I don't know...

You are not nearly the first person on here to bite your tongue for no reason. Nor are you the first person to freak out about it needlessly. I have done this as well, and have listened to many others report similar stories. No worries.

I have had BFS for a little over a year now and the sudden jaw clinch has happened to me 3 times. The last time being two weeks ago and that was the first time I actually bit my tongue. Yes like you the first time it freeked me out and threw me into a frenzy. Even the last time it happened a couple of weeks ago I still questioned why its happening. But for me BFS has had so many different symptoms that I lost count. The myclonic Jaw jerk is one of the disturbing ones because its so random and a pretty strong movement. It's definitely BFS!

My translation of you biting your tounge in the middle of the night (which, I find myself a victim of quite often), was because your jaw was tight from already clenching during the night. I noticed i keep my jaw pretty tightly shut during the day from being so darn tense all the time. I also always bite my tongue while eating, all the time. I know several normal people that bite their tongue all the time... and you know what, ALS never crosses their mind nor do they think twice of it .... ;) must me a anxious person thing. No worries!

I do this all the time. As I'm drifting off to sleep, my jaw clamps down and I bite my tongue. I even do it awake occassionally. Its no big deal. -Matt
