Waiting to Know ALS Diagnosis

Hi,it was really, really tough for me to survive the waiting to 14:00 (CET). At first I said to doctor my concern about ALS and expected something like "no way"...lol, he said "hopefully not, we will see".The first part was OK, then came the needles. My anxiety was terrible, then he put the needle to my thumb muscle area and there was silence from the reproductor. He continued and did 3 muscles on my right arm, my left deltoid (which twitched pretty much) and then my leg and my TWITCHING foot..all was clean! He said very important thing to me, that the twitching in my foot isnt fasciculation, but "action potentials". He said true fasciculations is wawe-like movement through many muscle fibers with typical pattern. Generally he said twitching itself isnt always fasciculation, however its seen.He said this is typical idiomuscular hyperexcitability and I should check my Ca and Mg ionts, so no way to know it from simple blood test.Anyway, no denervation!Laurent: I asked especially about the foot thing and was told that this muscle is the most "overload" muscle, since it supports your weight and bone structure, also we were right in our guess. Said its nothing special to twitch here and if some muscle should twitch, that would be this one.

I havent even read your post yet I just saw your headline!! You know you were fine I know I am fine now its time we break this mental ANXIETY! Good job and God Bless! Lovely(Savanturn, the zpack is still working for me...its sooo weird, I've had a WONDERFUL 3 days besides throwing up and well you know ) :rolleyes:ALSO, I'd like to say that my neuro mentioned the same thing that not all I am feeling is ACTUAL FASCICULATION but some are "twitches" or abnormal muscle movement...she said the same thing basically some can be nerve hyperexcitability thats why sometimes I feel "twitches" in places that dont even have muscle there...I kept asking how come I twitch here and there is no muscle??? LOL  ;)

Nice one dude. Mine is on Saturday now...supposed to be today but I had work to do.Time for you to have a nice big beer and chill with the lady

This is your second one and you are good!!! Congratulations. Now, enjoy life and put this worry behind you - twitches will come and go, but you are okay. I am very happy for you.CindyBTW - I've never had one, did it hurt??

It's funny you should mention action potentials, I actually thought of that when I saw I think ChrisUK_88's youtube video... and the ion deficiency would make sense... Action potentials work by ion exchange across synaptic terminals in neurons... so any kind of lack in ion would probably cause minor problems with the muscle fibers...

guys, i don't understand the word "lack of ion". what is an ion and what is the difference between action potenzials and true fasciculations?

Laurent: I doubt I can explain it in english. Ion is just molecule with positive or negative electric charge. Muscles are nothing more than "machines" working with polarity, electricity. So if you have electrolytical dysbalance, the muscles dont work well and being electrical charged, then can fire/twitch suddenly.Doctor said that true fasciculations are usually different, affecting a lot of muscle fibers so the muscle looks like it is waving. I remember the "bag of worms" what is how ALS doctors on the net answers call it.

thanks blizna.....do you know if the muscle abductor hallux is also including the sole?if i am twitching on the instep and the sole together is this not like a bag of worms (several muscles twitching together)???

Laurent, the bag of worms refers to waving of the muscle, not many muscles. He said it flows through the muscle with specific EMG pattern. Believe me, I twitch here and he saw the twitch on EMG, you said my youtube video. Anyway, no matter if it is twitch or fasciculation, you have no signs of denervation, so no ALS.He again said that this is just increased neuromuscular iritability (or hyperexcitability) that could be caused by ion dysbalance, thyroid problems (both dont need to be seen in ordinary blood test) or just without known reason.Abductor hallux=hallucis? You can see it here: Its only part of the sole. But it doesnt matter, foot muscles are heavily used, just ignore it like Im trying to do :) Anyway, know how hard it is.

thanks mate....that is where i am twitching....and and muscle further down as well....so this is quite normal for bfs? and why is it only on one side...? did your doc refer to this too?

Laurent, the twitches in my feet started on my left foot and it wasn't until 6 months later that my right foot began to twitch. I've had 3 clean EMG's (merely because I insisted like a mad women!) and been twitching for nearly 13 months now. It is completely common with BFS to twitch in the feet and calf muscles. Relax!Savanturn great news! Not that any of us had the slightest doubt :) Regards,May
