Twitching While Muscles Tensed?

I've heard over and over again that twitching in a relaxed muscle is not indicative of ALS.However, are there any of you who do twitch when a muscle is tensed? (I think I heard Simon say he did, as well as someone else who had a clean EMG in a muscle that twitched while tensed).Kind of panicky today, because I was typing at my computer when my bicep started twitching. I assume that because I was using my arm, the muscle in it was tensed.

sure do. Especially my fingers and my quad. In my quad, if I half sitting down, half standing up, when I look at it, it is going nuts. sometimes when I slightly tense my fingers, they start shaking. If I relax or really press, they stop. its like they don't like being half way used!

Oh my god! That's exactly what happens to my fingers! They sometimes shake or twitch from side to side. It's very rhythmic.Gee whiz, isn't this stuff great!

My hands will sometimes twitch when tensed. Especially the muscle under my left pinky. That very muscle was tested when I had my EMG so it doesn't really scare me anymore. I don't like it, but it doesn't scare me.

I think I am the person you are referring to who twitches in a tensed muscle. Still do in my thumb and in my thighs. Since that second EMG I am pretty much completely free of my als fear. I still twitch and cramp so I am not completely cured of health anxiety, but I no longer think it is an MND and I'm sure you don't have one either.

My fingers/ ghands and my quadsw/ hamstrings are the only places that I currently twitch when the muscle is tensed - sounds very much like everyone else who has replied.Safety in numbers and all that!RegardsSimon

I have also had twitches in tensed muscles. I had my bicep start twitching while I was holding the phone to my ear and my calf twitch while I has using it to drive. These are just examples.

I haad twitches in tensed muscles, and rippling of muscles. Considering shaking of fingers when they are half way through being fully streched and completely relaxed, I think it's postural tremor and I had it for years. I htough, and still think it's normal because muscles don't know what you want them to do: relay them or use them.

Fingers twitch when i'm typing, forearm too - i've had the odd few twitches while using various muscles over the last 4 months but there are certainly alot less twitches while moving and loads more while resting.

I might add for what it is worth that none of the neuros I saw (and I saw many) ever asked me whether I twitched when a muscle was tensed vs. relaxed. It seems to me that if this were a big clue to something it would have been asked about.

I twitch, that is all there is to it, my muscles do that, well when they are not into cramping, which is a lot less pleasant than the twitching.I have come to the accomodation now that there really is not anything in it, it is just the way some people are made, we have over active muscles and sometimes unfortunately over active imaginations to go with it.Stop looking for signs, you will always find something to perturb you.

If I slightly raise my middle finger up, it shakes side to side rapidly, not a twitch, but more of an intense shake as its moving on its on.Very strange indeed, and creepy. Happens everytime I raise the finger

Does 'muscle' also mean eyelids, cheeks etc.?If I squezze my eyes together, a lot of the fine cheek muscles and muscles around my eyes start to tremble beyond control. I totally panic and I'm just waiting for the doctors/neuros to confirm my worst fears: MS. There. I said it. Felt I had to.Yesterday I talked to my girlfriend about all my fears, and suddenly, almost without warning, I bursted into tears. An avalanche of tears lasting for something like 6-10 minutes. My God, I'm so afraid. :( /P

You don't have MS, or anythign else like that. I had the same problems with my eyelids and cheeks and everywhere else. I even had the biggest one I've ever had a few weeks ago. One morning, a huge muscle in my back/shoulder blade was moving my entire right arm as I sat at my desk. It had to be visible to others. My eyelids went crazy for about two weeks. My general rule is that when a new one comes on, make note of when it starts and then if it is still there two weeks later, pay more attention to it. Generally, mine are gone in a few days. Dude, I had the same fear. First it was ALS...then MS...now it is Parkinsons. I am 9 months into this crap and am getting a lot better at it. I rarely notice it anymore and the fact that everyone references anxiety is the God's honest truth. Anxiety exacerbates everything. If you had MS, your eyelid would not be the problem...you would not be able to move a leg (or something major like that). If you really need to, get an MRI, but I will tell you, I sais the exact same thing to my neurologist. I whined about it and said, "I'm scared I have MS!!!". He finally said, FINE! lets get your head scanned and sure enough there was nothing to be worrried about.

Hi MayGood to hear from you. This may sound ridiculous to you (and others), but I've had numerous tests the past year: MRI (feb. 09), EMG and SEP (jul. 09), bloodtests, neurological exams etc. I had a new MRI two weeks ago. This time, both my brain and spine was scanned. I'm still waiting for the results. The waiting is killing me.The only thing I haven't had (yet) is a lumbar (lumbal?). I feel like a door is still open if I haven't had all test available. "Could I be the exception to the rule …"? Etc. However - despite all the tests, my muscles twitch, my skin hurts on my hands and fingers when touched, I don't fully empty my bladder when urinating. Text-book MS symptoms. I am just good old frustrated …/P

Peter, my test results were back to me the day I had the tests. If you are in Denmark, I am sure the system is different there, but in general, when something is wrong, they call you right away. No news is good news. I am sure you are fine. I am literally sure you are fine. As they say, no one on this board has anything other than BFS. Shout at me when they tell you that you are fine. It probably took me two weeks to calm down, even after the negative test results. hang in there.

Well, I'm happy to let you all know, that my recent MRI came back yesterday - flawless. Nothing in my brains - nothing in my spine. Phew!(Now I sound paranoid, but somewhere deep inside I was kind of hoping for a bad result because then there would be som kind of explanation to all this. Sounds crazy – I know).Yesterday I was really happy. But ofcourse - this morning, a new twitch presented itself; this time in my left cheek at the cheek-bone. Drives me nuts. Now I really have to focus on the good MRI scan and not let the negative "what if" thoughts carry me away. Give me strength!/P

I twitch when I flex my calf muscle. Really frightened me when I first saw it. My advice to everyone on this forum is STOP LOOKING AT YOUR MUSCLES!!!!! Is that clear enough. You can look back I think I posted this same thread about 6 months ago. I don't have ALS and neither do you or anyone else on this forum. Go live in peace and don't take another day for granted.Tom
