Twitching in Right Hand - Worried

Hello – first, thank you so much for providing this site, it is really appreciated.

Well, I am 22 years old, female. Toward the end of November 2004, I had a strange twitching in my right hand (pinky finger)… lasted for a few hours. You could see the twitch. I was so scared because my father has Parkinson’s disease, so, automatically I was afraid that something neurological was starting in my body.

The anxiety was really high. I started noticing movements in my body… twitches (some could be seen, some could not)… in hands, arms, legs, eye, even my lower lip once, buttocks, etc. They seem pretty random, and are definitely more pronounced when I am laying around in the morning or at night. Sometimes I will be distracted and not notice any movement at all, other times I will be very aware of every movement.

I read somewhere that BFS could be what is going on in my body… and I also read that long term use of Benadryl (and similar meds) could be a contributing factor to this situation. For a while, I was using Benadryl to help me sleep at night and control allergy symptoms at night. Have you ever heard of a connection between the two?

In December, my father’s neuro @ UPenn was nice enough to see me to ease my anxiety and make sure nothing BIG was going on. She gave me the exam and thank god, she was very comfortable with the results, she did not suspect neurological disorder. The twitches have persisted though… I am so frightened that this could be a warning sign of a neurological disorder (ALS, MS, anything?)… the neuro did not diagnose me with BFS or anything, but she said that my situation sounded benign.

I have read a lot about muscle wasting and weakness – and I get scared that this is happening to me… would I KNOW if this was happening… I mean, I don’t think I feel weak or anything, but… now every ache, pain, trip, twitch, tingle, tired feeling, etc. freaks me out!

I know that a lot of this may sound ridiculous, but it is a legitimate concern of mine that I carry with me each day. I have become hyper aware of my body and its movements. Does this sound like BFS? Does it sound like something worse? This has been happening since the end of November – so, for a few months now.

One more bit of information; about 2-3 years ago I was diagnosed with Epstein Barr… would that have anything to do with this? I am also on an oral contraceptive.

Please give me any insight you can. Thank you so very much for your care and concern for people.

Being you are new to this situation their is probably not a lot I can say to reassure you, only time can do that. I wont get into a lot of the technical mumbo-jumbo,thats not my style, besides you can go on for ever with that stuff What you should do is get the usual battery of tests,of which you can read about here if you havent already. And if everything is O.K. you must deal with your anxiety. Above all try to relax and always keep busy. And like I tell the others,no matter how bad things seem to get ( And they can get rough, believe me I know ) Always have a sense of humor, And you must NEVER,NEVER QUIT ;)
