Twitching and Jerking: What to Do?

Hi everyone,The twitching has waned in my legs for the past few days, but now it has migrated into my biceps. I'm twitching here, but I'm also jerking in various parts of my body a lot last night and this morning. It feels like electrical shocks, or something, and it's scary, because it feels like I could lose control of my limbs. Will twitching stop in anyone else's most effected areas and then start up in places where you very rarely twitch? The twitches I'm having, especially in my left bicep are really strong.Anyone else get these? I've been extremely anxious the last few days, and I half chalk it up to being brought on by stress. I don't really know if stress could bring on such a physical symptom though. Also, I feel shaky, especially my hands. Not really weak, just shaky, which I don't know if this is a result of fear/adrenaline.Thanks.

I get the muscle jerks. It comes and goes. Some can be attributed to certain medication also. There is no rhyme or reason for twitching. I've had twitching for over 2 years and my twitching has roamed everywhere, even places I never thought they would go. My shakiness comes and goes too. One thing to remember is that this can be exacerbated by caffeine, alcohol, fatigue and even some meds. And, you said it yourself, streff and anxiety.I was recently put on a beta blocker to reduce the amount of adrenaline produced in my body. I've been on it for about 3 weeks and I think it fair to say that it may have reduced some of my twitching. It's ironic that you mention adrenaline becuase my Neuro thinks that could be one of my problems. I will tell you that when I have a flight or fight moment I can really feel the adrenaline release in my body. It also takes more time for me to come back down or relax from it. Of course now the beta blockers have helped that. I have only been experiencing this over adrenalized feeling for a couple of years.....when all this mess started for me.Hope this helps!CDC

"Will twitching stop in anyone else's most effected areas and then start up in places where you very rarely twitch? The twitches I'm having, especially in my left bicep are really strong."VERY MUCH SO"I don't really know if stress could bring on such a physical symptom though."YES I AM SURE THAT IT COULD"Also, I feel shaky, especially my hands. Not really weak, just shaky, which I don't know if this is a result of fear/adrenaline."THIS DOES SOUND LIKE AN ANXIETY-PROVOKED SYMPTOM RATHER THAN ANYTHING NEUROLGICAL. YOU ARE TRAINED IN PSYCHOLOGY FROM MEMORY SO IM AM SURE YOU WILL BE VERY FAMILIAR WITH THE EFFECTS OF STRESS ON THE BODY.GOOD LUCK.REGARDSSIMON

Thanks, guys. I'm at the end of my rope with all these symptoms. I'm not sure if what I'm experiencing is true myoclonus jerking, or if they are just larger muscle twitches causing me to jerk.I've read that myoclonus is not associated with ALS, has anyone else found the same?I'm buying health insurance for myself tonight and I'm actually going to get all of this checked out. I won't be dismissed this time by my neurologist, simply chalking it all up to anxiety.

Fiorebello - first of all, check your messages. I sent you a message and I hope it helps.Second of all, you are lik emost of us. One thing led you to the internet and now everything you feel is scary. I have a rule, "jerks" that you feel lying in bed do not count. We all have those at night as we are falling asleep, waking up, etc. The other night, I held my 2 year old as she fell asleep...she was jerking all over..legs, arms, head. These are normal! What everyone says is easy to say in due time. It takes everyone on here due time to get over it. Only a few really trust their doc and simply agree off the bat that all is fine. Me, I don't believe anything, so I stress al the time. You are fine!! A doctor visit will calm your nerves so do what you have to to get it done. You are not weak and you have nothing sinister. Sorry, girl, but you're like the rest of us....totally fine and miserable for it!!!

Fiore,I had these jerks as well and they can be scary...over time for me they passed...I have not had one, except for initially falling to sleep in several months.BTW, my brother has them as well and he does not even care about it!! Maybe we should take a lesson from him:) Hang in there!!Steve

This has started happening to me from the past year to now. Generally when im falling asleep but those are normal, I get about 1-3 Big zaps/jolts where my arms will pop up. Im getting an MRI next week to rule out anything else. Im assuming its cause the BFS cause i get my blood checked regularyly and i have all the normal essential vitamins and elctrolytes flowing. Im concerned if its from alcohol consumption, because drink every night to take the edge off and not feel the twitching. From what i read online you only get jolts and twitches from withdrawl ifyour a hardcore alky. Ive done multiple detoxs with no booze and i get a little anxiety but nothing crazy. I dont drink in the day and i work out twice a day! dont drink till the night. Ill see what the doctor says about that. Its a strange feeling though. very strange.

Do you get the electrical sensation right before or at the same time as the jerk? I get strong electrical pulses that seem to make my muscles jerk at times. It'll practically lift my leg off the couch or throw my arm around. I go through phases of having these and get them most when I'm sleep deprived.

These jolts also started happening to me within the last few weeks. At first I would get one every once in a while, but now I get many throughout the day (maybe 20 or so). The intensity of the jolts also appear to be getting stronger. What scared me too was when it would move my whole leg if I had zero weight on it. For me being a relative newbie to this condition, its frustrating that just when it seems I get comfortable knowing that I simply have BFS, a new symptom (like this one) will come up that gets me curious/scared as to what it might mean. After searching this site several times (people have different ways of describing this symptom), I have found that others have experienced this too with BFS. So I have stopped my worrying. Thanks to all who share their experiences on this site. It definitely helps me get through this!T
