Twitching After Exercising: My Story

I started exercising (jogging, lifting) about nine months ago. About two months into it my pinky was twitching rapid fire for a month. My neuro gave me a EMG and it cam back perfectly clean. I started running 5k four days a week followed by lifting. Everyone told me I was overdoing it and then you should not run so much.

Then they exploded, twitching everywhere, my ear, back, arms, legs and most importantly my calves 24/7. Who do you guess freaked out? Me of course, worrying about ALS turned me into a basketcase. I had the emotional stability of Caligula. Panic set it.

I went to the neuro who told me to take it easy, so I started walking instead of running. Most of the twitches lessened except for my calves. They are still going 24/7. Aaaauuugh! I went back to the neuro (the top in my city) and he wants to see me again in three months and to lesen my exercise. He told me the chance of me NOT having ALS was 99%. He says he sees this stuff in people who have twitching in calves "all the time." He stated that in the vast majority of cases it is BFS and only "very, very rarely" is it ALS.

Another reason I dont run is that my knee hurts when i bend it without warming up. My mind tells me that it is because of all the pounding I was doing on it. I can still run, jump, etc but it hurts if I have not used it in awhile, and only when I bend it or do squats in a crouch position. Of course I suddenly thought it was weakness!

So this is my question: How many here have twitches in their calves 24/7? Is this common in BFS? Did you get it from overexertion or did it just pop up? Is there anything that can lessen it?

Very worried....

Ok, you overdid it and I am speaking as a physician here. Yes twitching and the sensations you are worried about are very typical of BFS. Your neuro has no reason to lie to you correct? ;) Many of us on this site have had this start for a few different reasons...viral, trauma (surgery etc), stress overload whether physical or emotional, meds. Exercise intolerance is very typical of BFS, so in light of that and also of the fact that your knees are not doing well either I would lessen the intensityof your workout and listen to your body a bit. There is not anything in particular that anyone has found that lessens the intensity of a flare. YOu might check under symptom management. SOme have had good results with klonopin. But overall this is a patience game, you must have patience and it should lessen some over time.

Hey Allan,

Sorry about your problems. My calves go 24/7. Worse mostly in mornings and really freak out after ANY movement. My doc told me that with bfs it is not so much exercise intolerance, because we can exercise, but it is more post-exercise trauma or intolerance. Something like that. Anyways the muscles can function and move but either they don't want to or they are so tight from all the twitching and constant movement. Konopin is my d.o.c. but you may 1st try some sports creams, anti-inflams, gatoraide, extra stretching (before and after) vitamins.................

Oh, and do whatever Kit says.
