Twitch Issue: Seeking Advice

Hi again all~~
I always have to start out by apologizing for asking yet another question. Sometimes the new topics come so quickly on here, that it's hard to go back and find out something that you know you might have read about.
Anyway....I have a question about a twitch I've been getting, and wondering if anyone has any info or similar experience. Usually, the twitches I've been having now for about two months are generally pretty widespread, and rather quick, meaning that I'll have one or two, then have it go away for a while, come back later in the day, etc. I might have a calf or something that seems to twitch consistently for a while. BUT....in the last few days, I have a very annoying twitch that is on the left side of my neck, above my collar bone, and it seems to involve that general muscle group there, like if I feel it, it seems to be right around that general group of muscles. I also will feel it on my left shoulder occasisonally, etc. Anyway, especially if I am sitting in a certain position it seems, like laying on my left side, or sitting on the couch in a reclining position on my left side, that twitch will start in, and just keep going on and on. It'll pop and pop, and just keep going, if I don't move around and somehow get my mind off of it, it seems like it would go on for an hour or longer even. I don't really know, because since it makes me so nervous, I will get up, and try to do stuff to stop it, such as maybe just keeping busy so it might still be there, but I'm not feeling it as much, or maybe certain positions do somehow make them worse, I don't know.
But, I guess what I'm wondering is, do any of you have a twitch that is so persistent like that? My daugher was in a play this last weekend, and it was annoying, because I kept focusing on it and it was very distracting. I haven't had it much today, but sometimes it does seem to come on after the stress of the day. Not to assume it comes from stress, but I just mean that it seems to be worse at night for some reason. I was very worried about this, because my neuro happened to mention, before I had this particular twitch, that in ALS, the twitches are usually more persistent, like something you can see is there all the time. At the time, I was more having random, quick twitching. It still usually is like that, but this one is way more persistent. And, it's weird, because why would this particular one, being in my neck like that, be acting so different from the other ones? Does BFS do that? As far as the variability and also the persistence? Thanks so much for any help, I appreciate it so much!! You are all the greatest~~Val

I have that same twitch. Actually, I use to get that alot even before the BSF twitching started. It is very bothersome, but not alarming. We all get the hotspots!!!

Sueboy~~
Thank you so much! Do you get it where it is persistent like I described, though? I think that is the most worrisome thing for me, is that particular one seems to be so persistent, as far as when it actually comes on, it keeps popping over and over again, it seems like it can go for hours. I get others that are generally persistent, meaning that for instance I get can one in my thigh that occurs, but it's off and on all day, not constant. For some reason, this one on the side of my neck seems more constant, and as I mentioned, it seems like it comes on more if I am laying on my left side. It sure helps to get the reassurance that I get on this site! Thanks so much for the help~~Val

Hi~~
Mark, thanks so much for that! It is hard to believe, I guess these things seem to make everyone that has them feel that way. The thing is, this neck thing seems really weird. Here it is, nightime, and I'm having it again. I had a pretty good day, meaning at least I didn't feel that many, and this one seems to kick up at night, especially when I'm trying to lay down. It sort of feels like one giant twitch tonight around my whole neck area, it's a weird feeling. And, it's persistent again. Even the finger thing that I had at the beginning of all of this wasn't this persistent, it would give me a break for a while. I might try the hot tub tonight and see if that helps. Also, my sleepytime tea maybe! Or, a drink. I just worry about this one, cause I remember the video on the guy who had ALS, and it was like he had twitching all around his upper chest and shoulder area, and this is close to that, and feels like maybe the start of that or something. Yikes~~see how easy it is to get worked up about it? I saw that video, and also the neuro explained it like that, where if you have ALS, it looks like little ripples all over the shoulders, chest, neck area, and with my neck feeling like this, it's worrisome for me. Of course, that is probably making it worse. But, it is a weird feeling. If I look in the mirror, I can sometimes see the skin jumping. Anyway, thanks again for the help! I don't know what I would do without this place! Thanks, Val

Oops, just two other questions.....
I was going back through these boards tonight, and was reading a lot of old posts, and most of them made me feel better of course, but there were a couple comments made that made me nervous, and I wanted to ask. One, a poster said that her neuro said that atrophy with ALS can occur in the muscles on the top of the hand in between the knuckles. Well, this is the one area that I was worried about, because in between my thumb and forfinger, right after that first knuckle, is an indentation. I had noticed this a while back right when the twitching started, and was worried about it, but figured it had probably been there forever, and is probably normal. But, you know how these things are just discovered now? Anyway, I was wondering if any of you know about that particular area being one that is common for atrophy. It dosen't really look the same on the other hand, like it's more indented. Also, about the excess salivation thing, I've definitely been having that, and is that a pretty common symptom? It feels like I'm always kind of wiping the corners of my mouth, and I guess that can really be a habit, especially when you are thinking about it. Anyway, just wondering about that stuff, it really made me nervous when I read about that atrophy thing, because that had been the one place that I had noticed an indent. My husband is always telling me not to worry, that your body has lots of indents here and there. Anyway, sorry again, and thanks!! Val
