Trouble With Neck: Spasticity?

For the last few days I have had terrible trouble with my neck. It feels like my head is too heavy to hold up and I need to rest it. Today, I have had a lot of muscle pain in my neck and jaw.....I was wondering if this was spasticity? If it is...then surely that is not good!!!

Oh, yes the neck and jaw thing is one of the worse. For me I wouldn't call it spasticity but more than likely just plain small muscle spasms in the neck & jaw muscles. It's like instant fatigue. When my symptoms were at their worse it developed into tmj and the headaches were bad - it made me nauseous. You just have to find a way to ease them with stretches or massage or even heat - just be gentle with it and don't push it to much (see ) or have a therapist work on them if you can easily do that. If you lay prone and press on the back of your neck right up under your skull you should feel some relief.....there was a good article on this from Men's Health online but now I can't find it. The guy used small rubber balls about the size of a handball to provide pressure and release the muscles in different parts of the body and it really worked - will look to see if I can find it somewhere later if you are interested.

I have experienced this symptom many times before, sometimes for what seems weeks at a time. I theorize that it is due to muscle tension. In any event, I wanted you to know that your words describe what I have felt. I do not think you should worry about this one :)

i have had it on and off for months, i was told many people store their tension in their jaw which is connected to many muscles. Releasing that tension is obviously the tuff part. The twitchier the day the worst my neck and jaw feel.

I promise you it is not spasticity. If your neck and such was spastic, then you would have no range of motion with your neck, none. Promise :D)

Hi angus - I really did look for that article, didn't find it, but along the way I discovered so much online info on muscle releasing techniques that weren't there years ago - you should give some a read such as Most are mind-body or somatic exercises and basically are patterned by tensing the muscle group for ~5 seconds and then relaxing it then repeating until you reset the muscle through your mind and activation of nerve pathways. Most professional athletes that need a lot of stretch in specific muscle groups have used these techniques for years but the proliferation on the web is new.

Angus, long time no talk sweets :D) Feeling like your neck muscles cannot hold your head up, and the jaw muscle stuffs, is caused A LOT of the time, by stress and tension. It happens to me quite frequently. Don't sweat it hun, another BFS Normal. How are you? *hugs*~*~Amy~*~

yep I get days like this. Head seem to heavy for my neck and neck get seriously jacked off about it ( get sore as well). To the point where I feel I need to support my head by cupping my chin with my hand. Most of it is ( amplified) in the mind, although you could actually have some neck issues- which a chiro or PT might be able to help with. Certainly does for me - whether that be placebo or real I dont know, but who cares!cheers RodgerPS An OT told me looking at a computor screen for long periods, ( especially with poor posture and/or screen set up) with create real neck pain issues-which could lead to head heaviness feelings.PPS also get the jaw thing- like I have been chewing on jerky all day-BFS normal I think. Comes and goes.
