can anyone shed any light on what it means when a symptom of A## says that you have trouble buttoning your shirts etc??? does that mean that you can not button it? or does it mean that it feels funny -- i feel as if my fingers are clumsy--and can not do things quite right-- i do drop things too-- they feel tight or something ( my fingers )--thanks-- i feel as if i have sooo many symptoms.....thank you kindly for your responses..

but do you think that it could mean that it starts with feeling of tightness in your fingers ? i worry that this feeling will develop into something.... my hands just feel kind of tight....

It's not a problem buttoning where your fingers feel tight. It's a problem buttoning where you don't have the strength in your fingers to button them. Two movies I have seen have given me a glimpse to what clinical weakness would look like. The first was the beginning of the film awakenings where a boy was carving his name into a park bench, when the knife went limp in his hand and his fingers didn't move. He was trying to grip the knife but he couldn't . In another scene it shows his composition book and his writing is sprawled all over the page because he can't hold the pen. Another example was in the Movie North Country. One of the mine workers was tying her fingers together to drive the crane because she had lost the ability to use her fingers. In another scene she's pouring herself a drink and she's holding the bottle with the palms of her hands. That's real weakness. Where you can't make a fist, hold a cup, even brush your teeth because you can't hold your toothbrush anymore.

i did not see those movies-- they sure sound pretty powerful.....thank you for your email...i wonder if it starts with the tight feeling though-- i dont imagine that it goes from normal to weak overnight?

I don't think it starts with tightness---just weakness. Can't buttom shirt means no strength, not tightness, we all get that from time to time. I specially asked my doctor about arm weakness one time, and said does it mean achy, sore, etc. He said no, it means you couldn't pick up that purse you carried in here or turn the ignition on our car to get here. Best Wishes, Denise
