Treating Burning Sensations: Advice Needed

Hi, I need advice on treating the burning sensations. If anyone can let me know if anything has worked for them please let me know. Does any medication help with the numbness? I have just lived with this for so long but the pain is getting to me. Please read.Timeline of symptoms:1997: Intermittent twitching in temporal region of the head, it comes and goes.1998: Continuous and simultaneous twitching bilaterally in both calves and mild paresthesia & numbness bilaterally in both shins.Extreme and painful cramping upon flexion of calves in a static position of either standing or sitting.June 1998: Had EMG done and was negative.Periodic twitching in both hamstrings and buttocks.1999 – 2004: No changes2004: Surgery: Endoscopic thoracic sympathectomy for palmar hyperhidrosis which, is a condition that causes excessive sweating of the hands.2004 – 2006: No changes2007: Intermittent or periodic twitching starts in back, chest and triceps.2008: Both feet have the ability to “go to sleep” or completely go numb. This does not occur simultaneously. This is relational to position, like sitting for 10 – 15 minutes in the same position with me feet up or having my legs up or feet crossed. I have continuous pins and needles sensations and burning bilaterally in both feet and it doesn’t go away. When I get up from sitting, having had my feet up or in some other position without letting my leg and foot get full feeling back I can fall because my leg feels like a limp noodle. This has happened twice. These sensations started in my forearms and hands too. It doesn’t bother me so much because it is not constant and is positional, like sitting in a chair with both arms leaning on the armrest and my hands folded down in my lap. Then my hands will go numb and I’ll feel the pins and needles and the burning.March 2008: Had an EMG done and was negative.Started feeling sensitive to the cold. Toes will numb up even when walking or running.2009: Feet start twitching all the time now on both tops and bottoms and muscles at the ankle joint.Shins and ankles feel like they are being compressed. It feels like my circulation is being cut off.Ankle joints start feeling like they are sprained and hurt. My joints are cracking when I walk and flex my ankles.Feet are cold and started sweating more.Headaches more frequently than ever (don’t know if this is related at all)March 2009: General blood work done. Results normal. Tested for Rheumatoid Arthritis negative.May 2009: Specific blood work ordered by neurologist and MRI of lower spine. I told my doctor that Factor V Leiden thrombophilia, which is an inherited disorder of blood clotting runs in my family. Three of my family members have tested positive for this. I haven’t been tested for it yet.

First of all, great to hear of someone who has had symptoms for 12 years who hasn't gone on to develop the kind of neurological problems (like ALS and MS) that people like me on this site have tended to fear. So thanks for that!I am no neurologist but your symptoms sound a little like what I think someone with a peripheral sensory neuropathy might experience. That said, you clearly do'nt have neuropathy because the tests prove that this is the case. However, I do wonder whether the kind of medication that docs prescribe for the burning associated with neuropathy might work in your case too. Probably worth you talking to your doc about this. In NZ, docs use things like gabapentin and a range of other meds in this situation. These meds do have side effects of course and, given that there isn't a great deal of scientific basis in giving neuropathy meds to someone who doesn't have neuropathy, your doc may well advise against this.Good luckSimon

hi fls34I get bad burning knee joints only thing that I found to help is a herbal cream Called "anteflamme"its made in Newzealand (where i live) its basically menthol, peppermint, arnica and one other ingredient. All herbal not pharmaceuticals in it at all. helps in the short term if you really have it bad but will not get rid of the burning feeling, just makes it more bearable.Maybe you can find a local product with same ingredientsCheers Raymondonz

Thanks guys for taking the time to look at this and for the replies. I appreciate your input. Sometimes I think are all these odd things I'm experiencing just happening to me. Well it's nice to know I'm not alone.
