Tongue Twitches: Worried and Scared

My tongue has been twitching quite a bit lately and it is really starting to worry me. I have looked at some of the prior posts and they have helped give me a little more reassurance to try and not worry about them; however, they have really have me scared. Has anyone else experienced this most unpleasant feeling and if so, are the twitches still there or have they gotten better?

Thanks,

diotz2,

I woke up a couple of weeks ago and my tongue was vibrating. Talk about almost losing it  It's never happened since then. I hope it doesn't happen again. There are people at that have experienced tongue twitches on a regular basis. If you don't get alot of responses here, you can go there just scroll down the page to the neuromuscular topic. Lots of twitchers in that forum.

Your tongue will stop... relax. They're just like all of our other twitches. It will get tired of being there and choose some other part of your body to pick on :)

Renee, it was "old school" knowledge that tongue twitches were a bad sign, and I have even seen recent postings by neuro's on the MedHelp.org site stating that they have never seen a case of "benign" tongue twitches UNTIL they saw the patient he was referring his post to.

Why is this you ask? Because Top neuro's ONLY see patients that are DIAGNOSED with bad things, not benign things. Most people with benign conditions hardly ever get to see the top dogs because they are sent home well before any top neuro was scheduled to see them. Of course top neuros see benign conditions from time to time, but not nearly as much as they see patients with MG, ALS, MD and so on.

Trust me. I have read literally tens of thousands, if not hundreds of thousands of pages and posts, text and medical reports (some that I was not supposed to see but thanks to some good doctor friends of mine, I was given access to) and LOTS of people with BFS experience tongue twitches, so please try to relax :) I have even had a tongue twitch or two about a year ago. It only lasted a few seconds, but it was there.

Some people say that have had tongue twitches last as long as other people having eye twitches (which usually last a long time) and none of these people have ALS or anything bad like that. Again, try to relax and trust me. I'm not blowing smoke...

I have a few tongue twitches nearly every day. Some days, I do not have any, but most days I do. They seem to be getting worse for me as well. I have pretty much ignored them because ALS twitches are not going to be a handful a day. All the medical docs indicate that the tongue undulates quite constantly. It is not going to be a handful of twitches/day. I am betting that your are no worse than that?? My question is -- "If you went to the doc would he see them? In my case, 99% chance that he would not see them because they are so infrequent. So, most likely we would not fall into the category where a doc would see them and say they are benign. He wouldn't see them at all. Relax, the key here is -- DO NOT WORRY ABOUT TWITCHES. If you are worried about ALS then look for a loss of strength, if you do not have it then you do not have ALS.

I First thought I had been having Tongue twitching. I really started researching. I was looking at my tonque while it was extended and it was moving at the sides and the tip and even looked to be turned to the right some. Wow was I nervous. Did all the strength tests.

But From looking at my family and friends(prolly think I am nuts to ask) tongues and searching the net.
I find most people when extending there tongue have movement and it is not always to the center.

Making me feel more secure but enough to have me schedule an appointment with my Internalist(Wendesday).

I also need to have him look at my side of my face. It has never returned to normal from a Bike accident 8 yrs ago. Right eye is not as droopy but now from looking over my body since this twitching stuff. I find when I move my lower lip it moves my eye lids. My eyes water when I chew weird. Sure this is face stuff from the palsy I had but want his opinon.(basel skull fracure and broken facial bones).

Just my 2 cents not sure if your twitches are with tongue inside mouth or extended.

I just got back from Mayo Clinic Rochester, and they noted my tongue fasciculations right away. I had not ever noticed them before! Anyway, my main doctor came in and checked out my tongue with a depressor. He held the depressor against the side of my tongue and had me push against it. He said it head great strength and was "a perfect tongue".

From what he said, unless there are problems with strength or atrophy in the afflicted area, it's not of much concern.

I still had an EMG done after the exam. They didn't even plan to stick my tongue, but I asked them to just so I wouldn't freak later.

My EMG was clean, as well as the neuro exam. So, I have tongue fasciculations and I do not have ALS.
