Tongue Spasm - Need Advice

Hey everyone! First let me say this site has been such a help. I was getting ready one morning & I felt my tongue moving on one side- I opened my mouth I could see it moving in & out on one little spot, not rapidly---more like a spasm other than a twitch. It was on the side of my tongue, near the tip. I totally freaked out! It only lasted for a few seconds & it hasn't really happened since & that was 3 weeks ago. I went to the doctor & he told me that although twitching comes with ALS, he was certain I didn't have it. He didn't even refer me to a neuro. He said it was probably a spasm form me using it to mess with my wisdom teeth that are coming in wayyyyy back in the back of my mouth. He said the tongue can spasm like anything else, & he had seen it before. So....has anyone else had a twitch/spasm similar to mine? If this was something to worry about, wouldn't I have speech difficulties such as slurring, and wouldn't my tongue move more rapidly? Also I can flex my tongue up down side to side, I can cluck it, I can protrude it out, I can whistle, I can also do tongue tricks like roll it into multiple rolls. I wouldn't be able to do that if it was onset bulbar would I? Reassurance would be great ! I am a 25 yr old female---self diagnosed hypochondriac!

Hi J1980,

Welcome to the board. What you are describing is very common, you've probably seen many people on here whose BFS has included the tongue. I think lots of people get scared when that happens to them, because many references on the web connect tongue fasciculations with ALS. The fact is they can happen for lots of reasons, and your doctor is right, you would have other symptoms if it were something bad. So don't worry, keep reading the posts on here, there are many people here who have gone through the wringer with BFS, so you are in good company. I hope that helps.

hey J1980
It's nice that you have a doctor who says that "even though tongue twitches are associated with als, he thinks that you definately do not have it."
I have the type of doctor who if I went in with a sprainked ankle and asked "do you think that it's related to brain cancer?"- He'd say "dunno...can't absolutely be sure that it isn't...."
I wish I could get a different doctor...not one that coddles me, but at least one who has some bedside manner and empathy. Can't though, I live in Ontario, and we have a huge doctor shortage.
I bet you are absolutely fine! There doesn't that feel better?
It'd be nice to have my doc say that.....at least the people here at this forum are very nice and encouraging.
Jodi
