Three-Month Twitching: Results?

Short history: I have been twitching (bodywide) for almost three months now and had other symptoms for four and a half (tingling, pain, light cramping in feet etc), a clean neuro exam two months ago and a low b12 level. All other texts negative. Before onset of symptoms I made a four months journey in Guatemala. I have now visited the infection clinic. They took some blood and stool samples. (also see my other posts).

I got the reaults on the blood and stool samples last friday. Nothing wrong, all tests were negative, including HIV and lyme. They will do some more testing this week, but I doubt they will find anything.

The med had a theory though. She thought that maybe my symptoms can be caused by the anti malaria pills, the chloroquine, I took during two months in Guatemala. And she thougt that maybe my low b12 level could be a contributing factor. When I googled this I found out she was right, this medication can cause a sensory & motor peripheral polyneuropathy. But I wonder if this is it anyway. I didn't overdose it in any way.

The strategy now is to waint and see for two weeks. If now improvement she will probably send me back to the neurologist.

Lately I have had pain and uncomfort in my left arm. It tingles and feels like small twitches and it feels tight. Sometimes there is pain running from my index finger and long finger up to my shoulder. In my palm, left of the middle, there is a vibrating feeling, like some muscle is moving very rapidly, but I can't see anything. The rest of the twitching seems to have subsided a bit but flares up from time to time.

I don't know what to do now. I don't really believe in this theory. Anyone that knows about a case with chloroquine causing twitching and pain? Can you get rid of the chloroquine still lingering in your body or will it disapear by it self?

I have started takning b12 as methylcobalamin and I get weekly shots with hydroxycobalamin, I take folic acid and a b-vitamin complex, and I eat magnesium, potassium and kalcium (combined), probiotics and fish oil daily.

I put my faith in the heeling powers of "waiting and see". But is this enough?

Swede,

There very well could be a connection between the chloroquine and your fasciculations. There is a yahoo group dealing with adr's to those drugs, so follow that lead.

Take care,

Gary
