i am new to this site but like many others i thank god that it exists. like many of you after a weird feeling running down my leg i made the biggest mistake of my life and went to google. after reading about twitching in my leg i went directly to all the sites. a few days later i realised it wasnt really a twitch but an electric shock feeling. i was still reading and freaked myself out so much i made an immediate appointment with a neuro. after his clinical exam of me which was quite extensive he calmed me down and said i was fine and certainly didnt have that disease. i asked about an emg and he said it was totally unnecesary. i felt ok for a couple of hours until i got back on my computer. a few days later i noticed my feet and hands began to feel crampy. not cramps that are severe but i could feel them. after 2 weeks of that i finally saw my first twitches in my left achilles. then i saw them in my right achilles and left foot. that sent me into the worst anxiety of my life and then i stumbled on to this site. after seeing my gp he sent me to another neuro the other day and after showing him my legs and telling him of my cramping i went thru another exam. he is an older man and has been a neuro for 40 years so i felt safe. again he said i looked fine and i didnt need an emg but because i was such a mess he said he would schedule one for me. i asked him if he would get an emg with my symptons and he said no. that made me feel better for a few hours. he also told me very calmly that i had bfs. that made me feel better as well. here are my questions 1 i have read so much on this site that with a good neuro exam that the doctor can find abnormalities in the exam that would lead to his suspicians about disease and would then demand that you would get an emg. i dont really understand that. what can he really see and is that so definitive? 2 my cramps? they seem constant and go from hands to feet but as i said they are not severe but just feel crampy. when you read other sites they always say that in the early part you get twitches and cramps in your feet and hands. very scary to me but reading all the good posts here i understand that if this was the beginning of this dusease for me the twithches and cramps would be associated with weakness and atrophy but in one hand or one foot not both hands cramping at the same time my feet are cramping. hopefully someone here can clarify that for me because that is what is worrying me the most. at the end of the day i tell myself that i have seen 2 independant neuros which both said the exact same thing to me and that should give me some comfort. but as you all know it doesnt exactly work that way btw i am seeing a therapist on wednesday and am looking forwaer to it any comments would be appreciated

I think it is a fantastic idea to see the therapist and treat the anxiety. You have been cleared by 2 neuros and if they did not even feel the need to do an emg you can rest assured that you have nothing to worry about. I know that this is alot easier said than done as I am still struggling with this even after a clean emg. Cramping is a big problem for me right now as well but doing a search on this site I have come to realize that it is very common with bfs and really no more worrying than twitches. I hope you get some relief by seeing the therapist.

Therapy is the best route...its worked wonders for me. I've made great efforts to stop googling any health questions but confess I've slipped up the last week or so. Incidentally, my symptoms are off the hook the last few days. Coincidence? I think not. I saw a great neuro who said he couldn't in good conscience waste my money on an EMG and I've decided to take his word for it when he said NO NMD!Frances

I think you choose a right way. Mind therapy helps to control anxiety (unless it is not caused by chemical disbalance in your body - like pitutary/adrenal disbalance often found in people with GAD, but this could be cured/controlled with proper medication too). With that you definitely would feel better.Considering 2 neuros told you that your condition is not dangerous, you could consider two main reasons for cramps and pain. One is your blood composition - disbalance of potassium, sodium, calcium and magnezium levels is the most common reasom for cramps. Your blood gases also could cause twitches and cramps (hypocapnia or extra low CO2 due to frequent and shallow or, vice versa, very deep breathing causes your blood to change its acidity level - and hello symptoms). Another reason for cramps and pain is hidden overexertion. Being stressed or even feared, you got every muscle strained and tensed. it causes fatigue, cramps, pain, balance issues etc.so fighting anxiety is a really good way bcs you will control one of the reasons but not the symptoms. The symptmoms then should significantly subside ;)have a good luck!regardsYulia
