Surprised by Silence on Swine Flu

I'm utterly shocked! Considering the level of health anxiety that is generally on this forum, I'm surprised there isn't a single mention of the Swine flu. Oh well. Let me be the first. I work in a hospital that is crawling with the stuff. I have thus fondly termed it, "Swine Central." So far, I have been able to avoid getting infected, by donning my special space mask before entering the patients' rooms, but I'm guessing it is only a matter of time. The vaccine isn't going to be offered to us health care workers until December, and until then, it is a game of high risk roulette. My only personal complaint is that my body feels barraged. I am shaking and twitching and tremoring a WHOLE lot more lately. The Israeli military, (as I've nicknamed my immune system,) is on HIGH alert. As for health anxiety-I am past that. 99% of the flu cases out there right now are presumed to be H1N1. Thus, if I develop flu symptoms, (sore throat, cough, body aches, nausea, vomiting, and NOT NECESSARILY a fever,) I will call my doctor right away and get myself on tamiflu. Then I'll make absolutely certain that if I experience an improvement in symptoms followed by a RELAPSE, that I get myself to an emergency room PRONTO. The folks coming down with the bacterial pneumonia's are feeling better for a day, or so, then all of a sudden feeling cra-ppy again. The pneumonia is what is killing people, not the flu, itself. Far better to be safe, than sorry.Have any of us bfs'ers been vaccinated, and/or infected with H1N1? I'm reluctant to take the vaccine, but the alternative is much worse, considering my degree of exposure. There's no way I'm avoiding this thing. Blessings, Sue

My company is vaccinating all of us for free, so I'm getting the vaccination next month. Other than that I don't really worry about it. I've never really expected swine flu to be any worse than the regular flu. Like you said, swine flu doesn't kill people, the complications do.I have about 10 or 11 friends whose kids have come down with swine flu through school. It sucked, just like any flu, but they all got better. I haven't heard of anyone I know personally having complications with it. The only thing they said was that swine flu lasts longer and is a little bit stronger. Other than that, it's just regular cold and flu season. Seems like everyone is sick right now.Of course it is now a good time for all the anti-vaccination zealots to come crawling out of the woodwork, but I suppose that's a whole different subject altogether.

Hi Sue!! *hugs*I was thinking the same thing yesterday, that I was suprised there were no H1N1 posts.I have never in the past, gotten even the seasonal flu vaccine for myself or for either of my boys. This year however, I decided to go ahead and get both vaccines, just because the flu season seems to have started so much earlier, and it is expected to be worse...but who knows how it will really end up playing out. Logan, Lukas, and I all got the seasonal vaccination about three weeks ago, and they both got the H1N1 nasal vaccination last Saturday. They have to go back on December 3rd and get a 2nd dose of the seasonal shot, and a 2nd dose of the H1N1 nasal, which our family doctor has said is fine to be given on the same day. I havent gotten the H1N1 vaccine yet because I am not in a high risk group, therefore my doctor will not give me the vaccine until all of his high risk patients have been given the chance to get vaccinated. I understand the reasoning behind that, and I agree with it, however I am a little more nervous about flu season this year, but I'm sure that is partially due to all of the media hype around it. There have been alot of confirmed cases of H1N1 in my area, and now that they have stopped testing for that particular strain, like you said, pretty much anyone with flu symptoms, has the H1N1 strain. One of my clients caught the H1N1 flu strain last spring and died from it, which was sad. There was also a 12 year old child with no other known health problems, that was hospitalized and died a day or so later in the next town over. I know that people, including children, die every year from the flu, it is just scarier this year. A child in Logan's class was diagnosed by her doctor last week with the flu, most likely H1N1. So far, we have been lucky and havent had any flu like symptoms. The boys and I did catch a mild cold, but nothing that we even missed school or work for. Last week, we had a bout of a stomach bug, but that only lasted about 12 hours however it was pretty scary, since neither of my kids have ever really thrown up before...THAT was fun explaining to a 7 year old and 3 year old...they couldnt understand why they couldnt control it lolol. I will be happy when cold and flu season is over...but I think we are in for a long winter.Anyways, I'm glad you're doing well!~*~Amy~*~

Thanks for all of your responses. Hugs, right back atcha, Amy. I'm glad to hear that everyone is doing so well, and that there haven't been any untoward reactions to the vaccine. I had the seasonal flu vaccination and didn't even remember having it a day later, so that was a relief!Health care workers are supposed to be first on the list for the H1N1 vaccination, but it will be over a month before it is available to us here in RI.Blessings, Sue

Hi allH1N1 did the rounds in NZ in the winter that has just ended and I certainly spent a reasonable amount of time wearing my PPE and washing my hands non-stop! The vaccine wasn't available at that stage so was not an option. I escaped getting the infection myself about which I was relieved as I assumed it would flare my BFS symptoms up something rotten.Without sounding hard-nosed, I'm pleased that all you folk in the Northern Hemisphere are getting to try out this vaccine before it's introduced down here (which is planned for Mar 2010) - we'll let you iron out any side effects etc!CheersSimon

Hmm. There has only been a few cases here in Denmark (yet). But a danish guy died in Norway. He was a truck-driver and he was feeling ill and went to sleep. He never woke up again. Flue is not good but at least it kills people rather fast. Visiting this site, I know a coupple of diseases that takes years to bring people down. We all gotta leave this place sooner or later and why fear death?BTW: Being a historian I can tell you, that this flue is rather mild compared to more sisnister stuff like plague that takes away half the population. Perhaps this flue is interesting becourse it once in a while kills the white man living in the first world. Millions and millions of people in the third world die every year due to bad water, malaria etc. But that doesnt create any panic in media, does it?If a person dies, its sadIf ten persons die, its an accidentIf hundred persons die, its tragicIf thousand persons die, its statistic

I live in Germany and as far as i know everybody can get the vaccination from end of this month. At the moment health workers and other people in public service can get the shot and also people in higher risk groups. Normally i would not want vaccination, i never got a flu shot before, but it is recommended for pregnant women also ( and i am pregnant 19 weeks...). The problem is that the only vaccine you can get in Germany is not recommended for pregnant women because it contains adjuvants and some other "nice" ingrediences like mercury, chicken protein,formaldehyde- there´s big discussion about side-effects. So i decided not to get the shot until i can get a recommended vaccine as i have no other risk factors,-that will probably be end of December.

Sylvie, it sounds as though Germany is on the same timetable as the U.S. as far as the vaccine availability goes. What I find especially disturbing about the whole thing is the absolute ignorance and complete selfishness of some people! I just left the airport and people are hacking away, not covering their mouths, spreading their germs all over. And these people who insist on returning back to work, or school before the flu has run it's course...STAY HOME people! People are dying from this thing, and just because one person survives doesn't mean it can't kill the next poor person. Some folks just don't use their HEADS! I actually saw a mother boast about her kid being "tough" for going to class with the swine flu! HELLOOOO! That's not tough, that is MORONIC!Sorry for the rant, but the airport totally skeeved me out.Blessings,Sue

ITA, Amy, I scrub my hands all day long and work hard to keep the cooties away. I just wish some folks weren't so darned ignorant. Getting back to f2r's point, no, we aren't a third world country, but you can bet your bum that the residents of such countries will die from H1N1 too, ( if not more so, ) so naturally this is of grave concern, just as ANY plague that kills ANY human beings ought to be.That's not to say we should get our panties in knots over it, but simple common sense and common courtesy goes a long way. While it is true that the seasonal flu causes many deaths each year, the difference here is that H1N1 isn't following a predictable course and it is simply a game of chance. Furthermore, it has already far exceeded the annual death toll of any flu season, and it hasn't barely reached its peak. Most of those infected recover, but there is no pattern to explain those who don't. They are young adults and children without any known risk factors or co-morbidities and they are becoming alarmingly ill after they already believed they were well. This puts H1N1 in a completely different category, as "plagues" go.And for us, something new to exacerbate our bfs, at the very least. May that be all any of us has to contend with.Blessings, sue

Traffic still claims more victims... And cancer... Why not make new threads about those dangers? Or nuclear warfare or global warming or over-population or deserts running wild? Or sinking ferries or crashing trains or hurricanes causing mayhem or flood-waves and tsunamis or volcanoes or bombed airplanes in the sky? Or fat people dying when the heart cant beat anymore? In the USA 30% almost cant move as they are too fat for G... sake. What about that? Or the sealevels raising out of hand when the poles are melting and the polarbears are getting extinct? Or clash of civilizations or people dying with no food to eat? Or raising gang-crimes getting out of hand or lack of oil? Go take a pick. You got all evening... At least before something evil outhere takes you out for good... Like in the movies... Yeah... It must be the movies... You have missed the real world long time ago... You are all zombies driven by fear served to you by the internet and the television. Its not like you have heard it all from the neighbour next door is it?

In Canada, there have been a number of deaths related to healthy, young people, that signals that the virus is now a little bit different than it was initially. The people who died did so very quickly, without any chance of a recovery. At this point, there is no way predicting who would get the severe form and how would they be able to get through it. Statistically, the risk is low, but it is like a Russian roulette. The message is out there that pregnant women and children should get the vaccine if possible. They are trying to provide a vaccine without adjuvant to pregnant women but they are behind and advised that those far ahead in their pregnancy should not wait for this and get the vaccine with adjuvant asap. In British Columbia, the general public won't be able to get the flu shot until sometime in December. On the government websites, they made it very clear that there is no use of worrying about side effects of the vaccine, as the H1N1 itself could cause much more damage than the small amount of thimerosal that is in the vaccine.

I'll post this again just in case someone is concerned about side effects of the vaccine. The article is addressing some of myths attached to flu vaccine.

Get this,I'm only 15 and I had swine flu, went to ER.I was put on tamiflu and amoxicillin as I got an allgeric reaction too. Blah blah, About 6 days later I felt better. Now, about a month later, I have the same symptoms and feel horribly sick. I have a pulsating headache when I stand, I have white spots all over my tonsils, my eyes burn, ugh..And I have twitching! What's stranger is I had a horrible burning feeling in both my thighs a few months back, with a hoooorrible headache, and just after that..my insane twitching worsened but I felt better after 2 days. So, I have had swine flu and may be devloping it again if i'm able.I do believe I started twitching insane from my anxiety --> causing sickness --> causing more stress = Insane twitching.I have this pulse rhythm twitch in my leg that I mentioned which drove my mind that I was having atrophy
