Struggling to Sleep at Night

Thanks Ginny....lots of my friends rave about Ambien....I've just tried to stay away from anything which can be habit forming...I have to get up early everymorning and so I do try to go to bed early every night (fun gal huh?) and it can take 2 hours for me to get to sleep...grrrrr

It has been quite a while since I've posted and not much has changed. Just putting my 2 cents in from a pharmacists point of few.... I know that a few people have felt that Benadryl has caused their twitches, but in all actuality is is probably the safest sleep aid there is out there. Ambien, Sonata, and the newest one Lunesta are very efficient, but do run the risk of becoming habit forming. Dramamine (diphenhydrinate) is just a slight tweak in the chemical form of Benadryl (diphenhydramine), but benadryl is the most commonly used OTC sleep aid (tylenol pm is benadryl and tylenol mixed). Tolerance can occur if you use it nightly for up to 4 weeks. Depending upon the person, another down side is how long it lasts in the body, which makes some people still feel groggy. Other possibility is Doxylamine which is another weak antihistamine, but has good sedation properties, It is in the product Unisom (Unisom also has a product with benadryl so read the box).

I use benadryl for sleep without problem. It definitely didn't cause my twitching, and doesn't seem to make it worse.

Take care,

Gary

I will try the Benedryl instead of Tylenol. I don't need the pain relief. One question: for some reason, I haven't taken benedryl for a long time, because I have it in my head that it makes me hyper. Is this possible, or do I have it mixed up with something else?

It could make you hyper, but if you are taking Tylenol pm with no problems, then you shouldn't have a problem with benadryl. They are the exact same thing, minus the tylenol.

Take care,

Gary

not sure if you've posted about this before, but what is your insomnia like? Do you have a hard time falling asleep---but once you do you sleep well? Or do you fall asleep okay, but then have a hard time staying asleep through the night? Or do you have the double whammy of having a hard time getting to sleep AND staying asleep?

Did you try cutting caffeine after noon? Exercise regularly? Do you read just before falling asleep? (that helps me tremendously in that department).

I just posted to someone else that people like us (with anxiety) are not very likely to develop addiction to drugs...because we're so hell-bent on not needing any. (This was information I received from my former psychiatrist). Therefore, I suggest you take whatever helps---and don't think about the habit-forming side of it for now, since that's not likely to happen to you. Meanwhile, you can try changing your routine, if needed, so you can maintain good sleep quality once you go off whatever sleep aid you use.

Take care, and here's to some good zzz's.

Amy
