Stressed Out: Hand Spasms?

Hi,I'm sorry to create a new post but I'm really stressed out and need to know if anyone has the same symptoms as me.It all started one month ago, came back from a long trip and the next day, while I was typing on my computer I felt that my right index finger started to shake, from side to side, constantly, quite fast. Actually, I'm quite sure it is due to spasms in the hand (between index and thumb). It is quite discreet and people only notice when I show it to them. I called my doctor and she said not to worry, it was only due to stress, she told me to take calming pills for a week, and that should do it. So I did, but my finger would not stop shaking. In one month it only stopped a couple of times and just for a few hours. Of course, after that first week I started googling it, I went crazy hypochondriac with all the possibilities, started to test my strength levels by going to the gym very often (never been stronger) and went to my family doctor (despite a huge anxiety crisis just before) who did a normal clinical test and said my reflexes and strength levels were just fine. But for my sake, and since I had a tough medical history (had thyroid cancer 3 years back, when the whole hypochondriac me came to life) and since I was so nervous, she told me to see a neurologist. But I'll have to wait a couple of weeks to be able to see him... I'm starting to get more and more nervous, and I'm showing other weird symptoms, like pain in my joints (both hands and feet and elbows) that come and go, and the left side of my body tends to get a bit numb when I drink alcohol or if I sit down for to long, and sometimes I feel like I had a needle pinching me in different spots of my body. Some more twitching did come along with this but not very often, around my ribs, calves and neck. There are some spots in my forearms and elbows that are very sensitive, and if I pressure them they send horrible electric shocks to my hands...I am wondering how much of this is real (feels VERY real), and I wanted to know if anybody also had these strange symptoms, and if it could be due to BFS?A few days before everything started I had my last dose of the Hepatitis B vaccine, and I hit my elbow very hard (but on the opposite arm from were my twitching is). I am 25, I have a healthy lifestyle, don't smoke, I do exercise, but I do drink a lot of wine, cut out coffee but didn't seem to make a difference.

Hi sorry to hear about your ordeal with the thyroid cancer, I'm glad that is behind you now. Please dont stress your self over your symptoms as your story sounds very BFS normal. I've had the finger twitch as well as almost everyone on here has. The sensitivity you speak of from your elbow down to your pinky, that would be your Ulnar Nerve and I'm still dealing with that as well, for some reason, it seams to become inflamed with BFS and its been the topic of discussion on here many times if you type it into the search function above, you will find much reading on other posters talking about it. It is a very uncomfortable feeling when it gets hit and you get zapped, and dont be surprised if you wake up sometimes with a numb arm and part of your hand, it tends to happen from time to time with this as well. All of your symptoms sound BFS norm to me and I'm quite sure others will be along soon to tell you the same. I would not sit and stress until your neuro visit, your story sounds very familiar so I would not worry. I know, easier said than done, but you have found a great place for support and we will get you through.Take CareRobynn :D)

Thank you so much for your answer. I know that in comparison to some of the cases here I'm quite alright.. but did your finger twitch last so long (one month non stop) and was it like a constant pulse while the finger was at rest (twice a second aprox.) ? I just need so desperately to make sure my symptoms are not different from the ones the diagnosed BFS people experience... and my joint pain (finger, toes, elbow) is also a concern... has anybody had that? I think I can rule out ALS and Parkinsons but I'm never too sure....Anyway, I just got a call from the neuro, I got an appointment next week (13th), now I just have to deal with my anxieties until that day, cause they make everything get worse... when it strikes I feel that I can't breath right, and that I lose all my strength, my arms feel heavy and my heart races.... My husband is a great guy, but he is losing patience, I think he is starting to get annoyed and think I'm crazy... not too cool for newly-weds (2 months only)! As I said I had thyroid cancer 3 years ago, and although it was treated very easily, for a month they were unsure as to the type of thyroid cancer I had (from the mild to the deadly type), so for a month I though I was gonna die. Since then I experience hypochondria even with things absolutely unrelated with the thyroid. I wish I would just go back to being happy and worry-free again, but I am sooo glad I found this forum,it so good to be understood!

You are so very welcome. Yes my finger twitch went for about 2 months, maybe just a little longer, and still comes back occasionally, but doesnt hang out for long. Joint pain ect. is so common here, so please dont let that concern you. It is most definitely not a sign of ALS, and from everything else you have described, you can knock ALS of your radar. We are here to help you through till your neuro appointment, so ask any question you would like. Please take careRobynn :D)

Dude,You are 25. You don't have als.It is this simple.Forget everything you know about als. This information does not apply to you. Win the lottery much?I came through what you are going through. You will be fine.Go outside and throw a snowball at a pretty girl(or handsome rugged man...whatever...Im not here to judge). Since you think your dying anyway u never know u might have some fantastic fireside fun before u go.Scat, go do it.25yrs old with no weakness= no als-simples-

Hi guys,Well thank you for the reply, I know I might sound silly sometimes, and you must be right... I just think that my mind has a way of remaining worried no matter what people say, cause I just found out my twitches are in the worst possible place, and that sometimes (even if hardly ever) twitches come before weakness, my mind (without my consent) virtually ignores the signs that show that I am just fine. But you are right, I'll go to the beach (sorry no snowballs where I live) with my husband and try to forget about these symptoms that have been wrecking my life....

Skoliv i must apologize. I thought u were a gentleman Skoliv when in fact u are a lady Skoliv.Throw a sandball at ur hubbie instead of snowball at a random stranger...OK. where did u find out your "twitches are in the worst possible place"? Have u been reading about als online? * slaps skoliv's hand *Listen to me. Do not look up twitching anywhere else but here...and at that try to get offline altogether. Its not good for you at this stage.Im not gonna go through the figures again because noone ever listens. Your chances of als are similar to your chances of dropping dead for no apparent reason.Als just doesnt apply to people under 35. If your twitching without weakness I mean ur looking at 5% of 5% of .00001%....do u want to waste ur time worrying about that? There is ONE person in Ireland(substitute a city of 4mill with similiar birth rate here) who will go on to get als before 30 born every 20-30 years.Go to the beach.Don't dwell on ur twitchings. Please for me. As my Christmas present?

Yes I'm a lady Skoliv, uploaded a picture so people would know next time!I actually found out that it was on the "worst place possible" in this forum, cause everybody seemed to go crazy when the twitching happened in the "between thumb and index region", a guy got scared cause of ONE twitch there, I must be at my 945866665445 twitch at that same place... and by the time I finish this post it would be 945866665475... :) But seriously, you have no idea how your post helped, I am a very rational person and I respond very well to probabilities. So I have to give you a most sincere thank you. And I will drink a rum *beep* in your honor tonight!Cheers

Ive had the twitch between the thumb and index finger for months now. Ive gotten use to it. My finger will wag back and forth and thumb will move also. The area between the thumb and finger is always pulsing. Occasionally, the joints at my thumb and index finger will get very sore. Its all related. Listen to all the replies. Its nothing bad, just bfs....

Skoliv,I love ur use of of random numbers.....* applauds *enjoy you rum beep...did they really block co*ktail? How puritan. Oh you American moderators crack me up with your conservative ways. Come to europe where everyone is throwing sexy snowballs at each other and moving to Amsterdam.Seriously though you are fine.what?no I mean in a medical way...sheeesh....take care, stay off the internet and just try and stop thinking about it.

Hi guys, So just came back from my EMG (my neuro said I should do it, not me) and I am only half relieved... I was expecting to go home feeling much better but the doctor did not give me a 100% result. He just said that it seemed clean but he needed to take a closer look and asked me to see him on Friday to get the final results....Isn't that strange? Why couldn't he just say it was clean? Isn't obvious when it isn't? everybody else in this board seemed to get the results on the same day. Why would he make me go back there just for that? He did say some reassuring things like "so far so good" a couple of times... and he did start to ask me about my thyroid hormones and said my hand fasciculations (which the EMG did not miss btw) could be due to that... but then he added "of course... this is in a best case scenario" humpf... not very happy right now.

I get those fast hand spasms too so don't worry. I think it's hormonal for us women and anxiety/stress/fatigue will sometimes trigger it for me. I will just keep looking at it and it makes the situation worse. Try drinking more water and 2 bananas a day and some milk or other sources of calcium. Maybe you can try taking some electrolytes like Gatorade. My neuro told me to do this.
