Seeking Help with EMG Results

hope i get someone who is knowledgable about EMG results. Quickly my background,I'm 48 married with three girls , i had L5, S1 and L5, L4 fusion disk replacment, also had a setback after operation and had a shift on one of the disks which was the most psinful jolting pain you can ever imagin and had to wear a plastic body cast that went down my right leg to keep me from moving. ( it was removable ). I have twiches in my left and right calfs, also my left elbow that has stopped now also other areas around my body.I went to a respected neuroligist and he did a lower EMG. After this test he told me that I do not have ALS he believes its BFS , he did see somethings on test but said not to worry But when you say that guess what..... I was sure he was saying this so i can enjoy sometime before it (als) really kicks in etc ...... so I requested my EMG and saw that i have no idea what it says. So I was hoping someone out there can help if i post my report with these "findings" I'm terrified .... :crying: FINDINGS;ALL NERVE CONDUCTION STUDIES REVEALED NORMAL LATENCIES, AMPLITUDES AND CONDUCTION VELOCITES.EVALUATION OF THE LEFT PERONEAL F WAVEAND THE RIGHT PERONEAL F WAVE SHOW PROLONGED LATENCY (L61.04, R61.04 MS ) ALL REMAINING F WAVE LATENCIES WERE WITHIN NORMAL LIMITS.H-FLEX STUDIES INDICATE THAT THE LEFT TIBIAL H-FLEX AND THE RIGHT TIBIAL H-FLEX SHOW PROLONGED LATENCY (L33.45, R32.18 MS )EMG NEEDLE EVALUATION OF THE LEFT VASTUS LATERALIS AND THE RIGHT POSTERIOR TIBIALIS SHOWED SLIGHTLY INCREASED FASCICULATIONS AND INCREASED MOTOR UNIT AMPLITUDE. THE RIGHT ANTERIOR TIBIALIS SHOWED SLIGHTLY INCREASED FASCICULATIONS AND PRESENT POLYPHASIC POTENTIALS. ALL OTHER SAMPLED MUSCLES WERE IN NORMAL LIMITS.IMPRESSION;ABNORMAL STUDY SHOWING EVIDENCE OF CRONIC DENERVATION IN THE RIGHT L4 AND L5 NERVE ROOTS. THERE WAS NO EVIDENCE OF ACTIVE DENERVATIONS TO SUGGEST A MOTOR NEURON DISEASE.SO THATS IT IN A NUTSHELL..... IF IT WAS CLEAN 100% I WOULD BE ABLE TO MOVE ON, BUT ITS NOT SO IM BACK TO FREAKING OUT ..Thanks to all..BILL

Bill, your report shows that you have signs of denervation in calves muscles. This is perfectly normal in lower legs after 25, that is why practically EMG of lower limbs is not really distinctive for diagnosis (as I was told by my own EMG doctor). Axons (firing ends) of nerves innervating our calves are probably the longest in the body and can easily denervate/reinnervate. it is like long phone line - a bit torn here and there, some damagesd insulation here and there, so signal passes slower than in hands for example.Read again the conclusion, and you can see the key phrase: nothing to suggest active process and MND.

Your EMG result is very similar to mine. You can read my previous posts to get an idea of my symptoms. In a nutshell - 8 months 24/7 twitching in left calves (plus random twitches elsewhere), slightly atrophied left calf, left toes that won't raise off the ground more than 10deg and when raised are weak (toes push down with good strength though :D)) .My EMG/MRI picked up similar results as yours. Basically as a result of back problems (disks/sciatica/spinal stenosis) I have damaged nerves in my left calf and left arm. I still twitch like a madman nonstop in my calves.I used to be concerned about it but I'm fine now. The EMG/MRI and neuro explained why it occurs. Nobody can explain why the twitching started when it did though since the nerve damage has been long term. I can only guess that it started after I had influenza/lip cold sore outbreak at the end of Jan. But everyone has a different theory on the topic of how it started :D) .

Thanks cobbler !! It's not easy to accept that from the doctor but coming from someone in the same exact situation makes a world of difference. Thank you and be well
