Seeking Help with Chronic Symptoms

Hi,my name is Marco and i am 35 years old.I have lots of symptoms more than 2 years. It began also with faszikulations and weakness in whole parts of my body. Since this day i can' t make sport because my muscles are quick weak and i am tired after 15 min. of soccer. I have also ache in the muscles of my legs. At the beginning I went to many doctors but no one could find anything.Because of the other symptoms like stomach problems and sore throat i went later than a half year to a neuro doctor. He made the typical refelextests and a EMG and said that this is nothing neurologic. After 3 month after faszikulation went worse and i had also cramps my GP sent me to another neuro. He also the typical refelextests and made a EMG and found nothing clinical. After that I was tranqullized but the faszikulation was still there.Acting upon the advice of the first neuro I went to a doctor for rheumatism and doctor for tyroid. But nothing. In that year i was so tired that I slept more than 12 hours every day. After another half year it felt better. But the faszikulation and the ache in the muscles of my legs were still there but the cramps weren't.In Oktober 2008 i went to a doctor which is expert of lyme disease and for tyroid. He found that my tyroid is very ill. I have active and inactive nodes. But I don't have the lyme disease. Now my question and the reason of my anxiety. Four weeks ago the faszikulation begins to be more frequently and more powerful mainly in my arms. They were 5 days and nights without break. If i moved my arm or i contact my arm with anything cold it began directly to twitching. My right arm and hand also seem to be slower and the muscels in the forearms are faster tired and if i do anything with my right hand the muscles hurt quickly cause of weakness. My hand feels diffrent and my finger feels like overblown. But their aren't.I am little scared because of four weeks with my slower hand makes me wonder. I work on a computer and feel it every day and it disturb me and make me anxiety.Could this be only because of the tyroid? Or is it necessary to go again to the third neuro? Sorry for my bad english. Marco

I have read about and heard about other neuros stating that thyroid problems can cause twitching. So can parathyroid problems which is a different organ. I would follow-up on the thyroid situation since you know you have a problem there before jumping to other conclusion. Yes, other things can cause fasciculations (twitching) as many on this board twitch but don't have thyroid problems.

Hi,I know that the tyroid can make some problems but this makes me more anxiety because it feels very strong. There are moments that i think i can't move my fingers. In most cases in a half hour later it goes better. But the weakness is always there. The faszikualtion is less than days before. I have anxiety that it could be ALS. Is it possible that at the beginning of ALS the force of the hands is sometimes more and sometimes worse? Yesterday it was better not normal but better. But today it is bad again. To write this text it is arduous. The muscles caves because of weakness and sometimes it feels as it were before a cramp in the forearms. The up site of the right hand caves also because of weakness. Could this be ALS?

Marco,Your arm is displaying the same symptoms that your legs have had for years. You sound like you have what everyone else on this board has. You don't have good days and bad days with ALS. And, more importantly, you don't have symptoms for two years in your legs to have your arms suddenly flare up. You have a hyperactive nervous system and as soon as you figure out why please tell the rest of us. You have been tested more than once by a neuro so if there was a neurological connection, they would have found it. Rest easy......

Hi,thanks for your helpful answers but I was again to a neuro doctor. He was very nice and seem to be very capable. In his opinion all my symptoms are not caused of the tyroid. He made the reflextests and an EMG. After the EMG he looks a little bit frightend to my hands if there is no atrophy. Several times!!! I asked him if the EMG was alright and he said that it was. But how he said it concerned me. Because i had the feeling that he wasn't sure. I don't believe that he lied. Could it be that he can't see neither a normal nor a clinical EMG because it is the beginning? I have read that is very difficult to find any clinical signals at the beginning of ALS.My right arm and hand aren't better. I try to repose the hand for this weekend. If it is monday again fast weak I can' t believe that is something normal. Is it realistic to have 2 years faszikulation and after this time it began ALS? I read also that after 13 month the faszikulation are not connected to ALS. Is this true or only a story?Next thursday i have the next date to this doc. He will make an endurance testing and take blood for ck.I am quit anxiety. We will see how this story ends.Marco

Hi there,i was again to the neuro doctor and the value of my creatinikinase is also good or in other words it is normals. He told me that the emg was ok and the ck is alright so that it isn't anything worse. He also told me, that he can't find anything annormal and he think the faszikulation are benign. That is or was the good message. :D) The bad message for me is my right hand and the difficults i have with it. Now it is 2 month that it is more exetive to move my right hand. And my left hand begins also. Sometimes better sometimes worse. It seems to goes better at afternoon(after eating). The neuro thought that it is congestion because of my work at computer. But i had one week holiday and i didn't goes better. It is not only the faszikulation but also this problem with my hands that makes me more anxiety. The faszikulation are still there but less than 2 month ago.I read in this site that if i have ALS it would be seen in the emg and the reflexes are annormal and it would be progredient that i caouldn't move my hand after 2 month. Is this correct?I know everybody make this question but i have anxiety that it is the beginning and the neuro overlook it or he can't see it because it is to early. Is this possible? If the emg is clean is this for sure? 100%? If it is, what could it be with my hands. I can't believe that it is only the tyroid(for this i will get opration). Have anybody an idea? Have anybody the same symptoms?Marco

I would ask your neuro what other treatable conditions besides thyroid could cause your symptoms and then ask him to explain why he doesn't think you have them. If he can't list these other possibilities and explain why he has ruled them out, then you need to find another neuro. This advice is only if your symptoms themselves are a huge problem and not just the anxiety over them. If it's just anxiety then the ruling out of other things and seeing a new doctor may not be worth it since you know whatever it is is not ALS. But if the symptoms are as bad as you say, then you have to find someone who will turn over every stone. These symptoms are not easy to address but have been successfully treated by doctors who specialize in this.Krackersones
