Just spent some time looking through old posts here to see who has taken L-carnitine as a supplement (not many). I have to hand it to this forum - the search function rocks. I read some online info and a few medical papers about L-carnitine since I decided to try it a week ago. It basically is supplied when you eat protein - red meat being the highest. It isn't toxic unless you take too much and they've found that it helps with several ailments, neuropathy being one of them. A very few individuals can't process it naturally in the body and the deficiency cause symptoms similar to bfs. One guy here actually had this - CPT2 deficiency - a while back. This became even more interesting because I noticed my symptoms are worse when I don't eat meat (high cholesterol runs in my family). A few papers suggested that taking alpha lipoic acid (in lecithin) with l-carnitine for heart, circulation, and nerve health has shown improvement for some. A-lipoic seems to help me.....SO the combo seems to help me a bit more and I am less tired. There are a few people who shouldn't take it so check w/ your doc if you have thyroid or kidney problems.Yes, I know, supplements or vitamins will not cure BFS/BCFS/PNHE. But I and others have found some help from nutraceuticals. Just wanted to share this bit. If you have any experience with l-carnitine with or without lipoic acid, I'd like to hear from you.
