Scared About Twitching and Neurological Issues

I have been reading this site for months, but only now am finally posting. I am scared out of my mind about what has been happening to me. Not sure anyone can give me comfort, but thought i would post and ask a few questions...if anyone can respond, that would be greatly appreciated.

first, my twitching has only been happening for a couple of months...however, i had been experiencing many neurological symptoms for about 10 months before the twitching started. The main symptoms i experienced for that 10 months were sensory, not motor. Pins and needles was the worst...had them in both feet, constantly. Usually it would be either the left, or the right, though rarely both at the same time. I went to the doctor way too many times...did the usual tests for reflexes, strength, etc. However, everthing always seemed normal. The pins and needles in the feet was the worst, but during that time, also had other senory symptoms....feelings of weakness in the legs and imbalance when walking (seems to have been subjective, not clinical), pins and needles on the nose, very occasionally. Finally, my doctor sent me to a neuro...did an emg....totally normal. Did strength/reflex/vision tests. Totaly normal. This was the first week in january.

Also in the last year, a few other health developments:

-carpal tunnel

-ibs

-patella femoral syndrome

So....quite a mess.....but then a couple of months ago, the pins and needles stopped. Completely. Only to be replaced by.....TWITCHING. Started with my left foot.....instep along the side of my foot, and also the top of my left foot. Twitches seemed to be in these exact 2 spots only. Both are the long slow kind of twithchs, where it almost looks like a vein is coming thorugh the skin. From time to time, twitches elsewhere, most notably, both calves, both shoulders, sometimes the right foot. Muscle pain occurs in the twitch areas, particulcy the instep area and left foot and toes, but also both shoulders sometimes. Also have had deep muscle pain in calves, feeling of tighintess in calves, and pain on the outer side of right foot (not aware of any twitching there). There does not appear to be any clinical wekaness, but my legs often feel very very tired and wonky (for lack of a better phrase). i can walk on my toes and heels, etc and function more or less normally . Also get severe pain in my left knee joint and calf, which could be related to the patella femoral problem i have. The previous symptoms of pins and needles have stayed away since the twitching started. Ok..thanks for bearing with me on that story...here are my questions:

1) I know that pins and needles, tired legs, etc can be symptoms of BFS, but from reading this board i have assumed that such other symptoms follow the onset of twitching, not precede it. but does it ever happen the other way around, where the non-twitching sympotms precede the twitching? And then stop when the twitching starts?

2) From reading this board, i assume that asymmetrical twitching is worse than symmetrical (in terms of being more indicative of a potentially serious neurological disorder) . Although my twitches occur on both sides of my body, the most constant twitcing is definitely the left foot. Does anyone else on this board have the twicthing largely in one limb on one side of the body?

3) does anyone else share the hotposts i have - top of one foot, almost right in the middle, and instep of same foot?

4) as i mentioned, i have been having extreme pain in my legft knee joint, too. Could this be related to the twitching? Perhaps a sciatica problem? Not even sure if sciatica or patella femoral can cause twitching.

thanks again for anyone reading this. I realize this is not a site to get medical advice (and i am seeing my gp AGAIN on monday) but if anyone has any knowledge, experiences, etc. to share, that would be great. thanks.

Cramp preceeded twitching in my case. Muscular pain/discomfort in both legs although right leg is normaly affected the most, also, twitching far more active in right leg (visable but not felt). 10 years with these symptoms and no signs of anything more serious.

Regards Steve.

I have had it for 11 months in the left foot. Just as you have described!

The doctor told me that since I have no clinical weakness that it's benign.

Let me know what the doctor tells you!

I twitch in both calves and feet. Much worse on left. Left foot, I definitely get the twitching on the top. Horrible sensation! Have been twitching 10 years.

thanks a lot, schuey. Yes, ALS is one of my fears....my biggest one, of course. I am aware that sensory symptoms are not associated with ALS, but as i said in my first post, the sensory symptoms have totally stopped now, to be replaced by the twitching, muscle pain, etc. So, it is hard for me to know whether the twitching i am having now is related to the pins and needles, or is a whole new thing. Anyway, thanks so much again.....it sure it nice to see strangers reaching out and helping one another.

1) ...... but does it ever happen the other way around, where the non-twitching sympotms precede the twitching? And then stop when the twitching starts?

Yes. I did have a small twitch in a finger, but then got pins and needles for a couple of days, then full body twitching.

2)Does anyone else on this board have the twicthing largely in one limb on one side of the body?

Left ankle, foot definitely more active.

3) does anyone else share the hotposts i have - top of one foot, almost right in the middle, and instep of same foot?

Not anymore, but I've had it.

4) as i mentioned, i have been having extreme pain in my legft knee joint, too. Could this be related to the twitching? Perhaps a sciatica problem? Not even sure if sciatica or patella femoral can cause twitching.

I've got this too, but I believe it is related to the lower back.

There appear to be legions of twitchers out there. Everyone is a little different and consequently feels the syndrome in their own way. Although specifics are comforting at the time, it is the whole picture that must be kept in view. It really doesn't matter if the twitches preceeded the P&N or vice versa. What is important is, that in general, your perception of the fascics and concommitant symptoms is within the parameters of BFS.

You are a new person whether you continue to have fascics or not. Go to your GP and have what tests that you think are necessary, but do not look entirely to someone else and a bunch of machines to define your health. If you were falling down or were otherwise compromised than you would,no doubt, be more reliant on the health care system. Your GP and Neuro have already given you a clean bill of health. Believe in this: and your deep down inner-self that burns bright. Try not to be alarmed by odd symptoms that crop up from time to time: your body is a whole and as such, when one thing is out of alignment then other things are affected by this. Revel in the gorgeous natural surroundings of where you live, and let the twitching fade into the background.

(not scared anymore on East Coast )
Cheers,

Basso

THANKS SO MUCH TO ALL OF YOU. I HAVE MY GP TODAY, AND WILL LET YOU KNOW HOW IT GOES, BUT FEEL SO MUCH BETTER AND SO MUCH LESS ALONE AT THIS POINT. THANKS!!!
