Running After Hernia Surgery

I have been treated by chiropractor recently. Asking him about "unpleasant feeling" in my right leg he said this is common for L5/S1 malformation like radiculopathy or benign cyst around disc. Cramps in the legs are connected with herniated discs in this area.
After 2 months break caused by hernia surgery I start to run. Without any problems I run 2.5 miles within 30 min.

Guinness,

The pain usually starts on the left side of my butt and radiates down the back of my leg to the knee level. It is a very intense electrical type pain following the sciatic nerve down the back of my leg. It is so intense it startles me and I have to move to another position immediately. It is probably the most intense short burst of pain that I have ever felt. When I first starting having it I could be laying in bed and have it fire every 3 seconds or so continuously until I got of of bed. The worst positions to cause it would be sitting in a chair with my knee bent and my foot under the chair or driving with me knee flexed close to the seat. If I immediatley stretch my leg out while sitting I usually get relief. Sometimes sitting a chair that has too much padding can cause it also.

The pain caused from BFCS is dull aching, tightness, cramping in my calves and hamstrings. It is a totally different type of pain.

Swift_TaySwift20,
I had an L5-S1 herniation after my second pregnancy. The disc would not move back into place as it was descending along the sciatic nerve root. I had intense pain in my lower body and leg, the pain can get intense. Most docs wait for the disc to slide back into place, mine had pushed out and was down the nerve root so it was impossible for it to go back into place. The surgery was the best thing for me, it took 6 months for my sciatic nerve to return to normal after being irritated by the bulge. I have no long term effects from the herniation and no pain now.:)

For those of you who have responded to this post, when you were feeling calf pain, did you also feel pain down the back of your leg (hamstring area)?

My calves still hurt and get tight, but my upper leg pain is less frequent. Can the pain occur anywhere along the sciatic nerve or must the entire length of the nerve (up to the area of pain) be affected? Can a person's calves hurt and their hamstrings not?

I hope that makes sense!
