Rising Anxiety over Forearm Twitching

Hi all,

I've been here on & off in the last 2 years with various twitching problems. Had an EMG a couple of months ago which was clear.

My right forearm started twitching almost non-stop about 4 days ago. The muscle aches from it, and now it feels weak -- don't know if it's perceived weakness or not. Just feels worn down. Getting worried here. That ALS thought unfortunately creeps back in when something like this goes on. I'd rather have twitches all over than in just one concentrated spot like this. It's very scary.

Any thoughts on this, or anything at all would be appreciated. Don't like this feeling at all -- very scary.

Thanks,
Kate

Katie,

Don't let the localized twitching get to you, it's just a hot spot and will settle down. And if it doesn't, there still isn't any reason to worry. I've been twitching in the calves for the past 16 months  .

Take care,

Gary

Hi Gary,

Yeah, I twitched in my left foot for what seemed like a year. It drove me nuts. Even had perceived weakness in that leg & foot, but that all went away. Never had the persistent twitching in my arm like this. Boy, when I think I have this thing figured out and not worried about it anymore, I get another new thing going on like this and get all worried again. Just had my husband do a strength test with my arms and it seems okay -- but you know, sometimes it just feels weaker and with all the twitching going on -- it just plays with your head, too.

Thanks for the post. It's so good to have the support here.

Hey Katie,

As I'm sure you know the clean EMG, and the length of time you've had fasciculations without experiencing any real, clinical weakness, pretty much rule out ALS. Hope you can drive those bad thoughts outta your head!!

:)

Katie,
I, too, had a sustained twitch in my right forearm. It lasted for about five days without stopping, then was intermittent for the next few weeks. Still twitches in that spot once in a while just to keep me from forgetting about it! I usually get a rubbery, weak feeling wherever I have a sustained 'hot spot'--maybe the prolonged twitching fatigues the affected muscle. It's not a true weakness, as you have discovered. Oh, if we could all have a penny for every strength training exercise we have put ourselves through, I know a lot of us would be rich (not least of all myself!). Anyway, I've had this for over seven years and the worst is over, so hang in there--the bad phases will get fewer and farther between!
