Right Hand Indentation - Worried?

I am panicking today as I have noticed that when I extend my right thumb and sort of push it backwards, an indentation line appears at the base of my hand and goes up towards my thumb. This does not happen with my left hand. Is this a sign of muscle wasting? Does anyone else have this?

Thanks

Hi, sorry, I would like to help you but I am not sure I understand what you mean. Possibily you talk of the little "hole" between tendons at the base on the hand, which I have on both sides.
I think a visible sign of muscle wasting is, first, having serious troubles using that muscle.
Remember that we are not perfectly shaped, I too have differences in muscle size, like my right calf is smaller than my left, but I consider it to be pretty normal.

Thanks for trying to help. Sorry, didn't explain myself very well. If you draw a straight line down from the finger next to the index finger to about an inch from where the hand joins the wrist (is this called the thumb pad??), the indentation is there. I don't have any weakness though.

are you talking about between the thumb and index finger? If you are not and you are talking about below the base of your thumb, then yes it is normal to have an indentation there, at least mine does. Mine is more pronounced on one more then the other also. No that does not mean that is atrophy, but like Squack said, if it was you surely would have weakness there...Jenn

Thanks Jenn, no I wasn't talking about between thumb and index finger, yes, more towards the base of the thumb. Think it might be normal for me.

I actually saw a Pt the other day with atrophy in the base of his thumb and between the thumb and forefinger..... It was very very very obvious and doesn't sound anything like what you are describing.... I am always thinking my right hand has some atrophy because I can see the tendons on the back of my hand between my fingers... All my providers have assured me this is not atropghy but some loss of fat pads due to age. The base of my thumbs are not equal either and that is normal....

"old lady hands" my GP teased me.... He says atrophy in hands from neuro disease is most noticeable in the palms of the hands and is obvious not subtle....
Hope this info helps a bit.
